(GLO)- Recently, hundreds of parents in Pleiku City requested the City Department of Education and Training to clarify the matter of the music teacher at Cu Chinh Lan Primary School incorrectly assessing the students' abilities. This incident has received many opinions, most of whom agree that the teacher's assessment was not objective and substantive.

Besides, some opinions say that many parents and students still have the mindset of underestimating subjects that are "implicitly" understood as secondary subjects such as: Music, Fine Arts, Physical Education, Civic Education...

My friend is a martial arts child. Since childhood, he has been attached to, practiced and loved martial arts. Eagerly applying for the Physical Education Department at a university, he wanted to become a physical education teacher while most of his peers chose the following majors: Finance-Banking, Accounting-Auditing or Foreign Economics... Many times, my friend felt sad when he had to hear bad things from people who only considered Physical Education as a minor subject. With the determination to stick with the chosen path, my friend has made efforts to blur the boundaries between major and minor subjects, be creative in teaching, inspire students in each class, and create excitement for them to understand the importance of exercising and improving their physical fitness. Thanks to that, my friend gradually overcame prejudices and was loved by students. He also found good "seeds" to develop Vovinam martial arts at the school where he is working.

For a long time, the evaluation and classification of students at the end of the year, especially in junior high school and high school, has been calculated by the average score of all subjects. To achieve the title of excellent and advanced student, students also need to meet separate standards for Math and Literature. Along with that, the arrangement of high school graduation exams and university entrance exams for admission to majors has unintentionally brought about the idea of "one side is important, one side is not important" in parents and students regarding subjects. Economic majors prioritize block A with Math-Physics-Chemistry or block D with Math-Literature-Foreign Language, Medical-Pharmacy majors prioritize B with Math-Chemistry-Biology, Social studies majors prioritize block C with Literature-History-Geography. The shadow of the subjects: Music, Fine Arts, Physical Education is quite faint and only appears in the exams for admission to majors based on talent such as: Vocal Music, Architecture, Painting. And more than a decade ago, this field was still not noticed by many parents and students. That is why when Civic Education became a subject in the Social Science subject group in the high school graduation exam, many people were surprised.

Among many opinions, some parents pointed out that most students who receive scholarships to study abroad are often highly appreciated in gifted subjects such as: Music, sports or spirit of participating in social activities. That is one of the important factors to decide whether a student is accepted or not, besides the score. Therefore, the idea of main subjects and minor subjects should also be gradually eliminated. In 2021, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular No. 22/2021/TT-BGDDT regulating the assessment of junior high school and high school students. This is an innovation in education when considering subjects equally fair to evaluate students' learning outcomes. No longer does this subject "carry" the score for another subject, all subjects are equally fair. This will help students freely pursue their strengths as well as choose a career that suits their qualities.

However, the “remnants” of the main and secondary subject ideology still remain. To completely solve this problem, in addition to innovation in assessment and classification methods, each subject teacher also needs to be proactive and creative in teaching to create interest and arouse passion and love of students. Along with that, parents should guide and encourage their children to choose a major instead of imposing their own thoughts. That also helps children realize their own qualities and interests in each subject so that they can make more suitable choices for the future.
