Esports players are a 'completely different level'
This is an interesting sharing of Mr. Michael Minsoo Chung - CEO of Cerberus Esports - during a dialogue with students held at BRIS Primary School (HCMC) on April 10.
Cerberus Esports is currently one of the most famous and successful Esports (electronic sports) teams in Vietnam today.
Mr. Chung acknowledged: "Not everyone who plays games a lot or is good at playing games becomes a professional Esports athlete. Becoming an Esports player is a completely different level, a completely different story."
As the person directly selecting and training Esports athletes to participate in international arenas, Mr. Chung realized that professional gamers not only need good reflexes or high technical index, but also need the ability to work in a team, tactical thinking, strict discipline and especially a stable physical condition.
Nowadays, many young people still think that Esports is a shortcut to the "million dollar dream". But according to statistics from the Vietnam E-Sports Association, less than 1% of gamers can enter professional tournaments, and only a very small portion of them can make a living from this profession long term.
Faced with this reality, to evaluate whether he can become a professional Esports player or not, he frankly said: if you are not constantly in the top 10 of tournaments, you should choose another direction.
“Esports is a real profession, there is no room for ambiguity,” he said.
Keep the passion, but learning is still the foundation
Sharing with students, Mr. Chung gave clear advice: "Studying must come first. Keep your passion for gaming as a form of entertainment, but don't forget your responsibility to study."
He revealed that many successful Esports players at Cerberus are people who have had good academic backgrounds.
"Because they know how to organize their time, manage themselves and absorb tactics quickly, indispensable skills in a top competition environment," he said.
Mr. Chung also emphasized the importance of balance. According to him, playing games, watching movies or surfing TikTok can all be addictive if not controlled.
In response to many parents' concerns about their children being "addicted to games," Mr. Chung said that it should not be banned, because if so, children will hide, be sneaky, and will be harder to control.
The most important thing is to set limits for your child. For example, parents need to accompany and set rules: play only after studying, how long is enough to play, and know when to stop.
"Children are easily carried away by emotions, so the role of adults in guiding and supervising them is extremely important," he said.
Esports gamers also need… physical strength
One of the most surprising things for the students that day was Mr. Chung's sharing that professional Esports players also have to exercise and go to the gym every day.
Gamers still have a physical training schedule no different from traditional athletes. That is because competition is stressful and high pressure, if you do not have good health, you will not be able to survive.
Similar to students, Mr. Chung believes that you should exercise and train your physical fitness to develop comprehensively. A strong physical body can provide enough strength for the mind.
