Can Ha - A bright spot in implementing civilized funerals in rural and suburban areas of Hanoi

(PLVN) - No lavish feasts to invite guests; no "rolling the road" to carry the body to burial; no hired mourners, scattering votive paper during the funeral... All funerals in Can Ha village, Can Huu commune, Quoc Oai district, Hanoi for many years have been organized solemnly - economically - affectionately.

Can Huu Commune, Quoc Oai District, Hanoi is a typical new rural area in the suburbs of Hanoi. For many years, the entire population of Can Ha Village has changed in a positive direction in organizing civilized and economical funerals.

Mr. Bui Dao Hoang, head of Can Ha village, shared: Since the 1960s, the people of Can Ha village have performed a part of civilized funerals such as not wearing burlap clothes, only wearing mourning scarves. However, like other villages in the North, families with deceased relatives all have a grand feast; during the funeral, there is still the scene of "rolling the road". In particular, mentioning the two words "cremation" in front of the elderly is considered a taboo... Those things are no longer suitable for the current development trend.

Therefore, since 2018, implementing the movement of organizing civilized funerals, the Commune People's Committee has promoted propaganda work through associations and organizations so that people are aware of the importance and significance of implementing a new lifestyle in funerals.

“Thanks to good propaganda, funerals in the village have changed significantly, and bad customs have been gradually eliminated. Funerals are solemn but not held for long periods, the deceased's body is not left in the house for more than 36 hours, and the loudspeaker is not turned on too loud or past the prescribed time. Notably, 100% of families with deceased relatives in Can Ha now complete cremation procedures, take the ashes home, and then hold the funeral,” Mr. Hoang shared.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Chairman of Can Huu Commune People's Committee, said that in order to implement the Resolution of the Hanoi Party Committee and the Directive of the City People's Committee on promoting the organization of civilized funerals, Can Huu Commune People's Committee has directed departments, unions, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, Party committees for ministries and village authorities to immediately implement the spirit of direction from superiors.

Initially, the propaganda and mobilization of people to practice civilized funerals encountered many difficulties. However, with the determination of grassroots cadres, the mobilization of people in Can Huu commune has achieved results.

A typical example is Can Ha village, which can be said to be a bright spot in organizing funerals in Quoc Oai district. When someone passes away, the village establishes a funeral committee; the residential area and the Fatherland Front actively encourage people to choose cremation for the deceased.

With the participation of all levels and sectors, and the consensus and support of the people, the implementation of civilized and progressive funerals, especially cremation in the village, is spreading rapidly. For many years now, 100% of funerals in Can Ha have been organized in a civilized manner.

“The mobilization and propaganda for Can Ha villagers to organize economical and civilized funerals has been greatly contributed by the Vietnam Fatherland Front and village cadres over the past many years. In particular, the Party Committee and the leadership of Can Ha village have persistently propagated and mobilized in a "slow and steady" manner to help people realize that this habit is no longer suitable for building a civilized and cultural lifestyle today. The funeral model in Can Ha village has been successful and spread to other villages such as Can Thuong, contributing to building Can Huu commune to become more and more developed, civilized and modern,” Mr. Dung expressed.

Chairman of Can Huu Commune People's Committee added that the Party Committee and People's Committee have assigned the Commune Fatherland Front to organize a conference to study the funeral model of Can Ha village. In the near future, other villages in the commune will certainly learn and follow the civilized funeral model.

Speaking at a conference on building a civilized lifestyle and a cultural life, the leader of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports said: Currently, funerals are associated with customs and legal regulations. In order to eliminate bad customs and build a civilized and progressive lifestyle, the Party and the State have issued many Directives and Resolutions on building a civilized lifestyle and a cultural life.

That is both a condition for socio-economic development and contributes to adjusting the behavior and lifestyle of each member in the community, contributing to implementing a civilized lifestyle in weddings and funerals.

According to the leader of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, with the spirit of Solemnity - Thrift - Affection, many villages, hamlets and residential groups have established funeral organizing committees, unifying the procedures and rituals in accordance with the spirit of local conventions and covenants to show concern and mutual assistance among community members when facing difficulties and misfortunes. The situation of organizing cumbersome funerals, lasting for many days, with lavish meals... has been overcome.
