READING HABITS ARE GRADUALLY CHANGING

Nowadays, the strong development of science and technology makes many people have less time to read books and newspapers. Limited time and the appearance of many types of audio-visual entertainment have changed reading habits.

Globalization in general and the Internet in particular have changed readers' habits of going to bookstores and libraries. Instead, they can use their network accounts to buy Ebooks to read via computers or smartphones.

In Vietnam, according to a survey, people today read books and newspapers much less than in other countries in the region. Only 30% of people read printed books and newspapers regularly, 44% read occasionally, and 26% do not read books or newspapers at all.

With the development of mass media and social utilities such as: Electronic newspapers, Facebook, Youtube... it seems that "there is no more chance" to maintain the habit of reading books. Readers are no longer interested in reading directly from books.

Printed books cannot compete with the convenience of e-books. On the other hand, the situation of being lazy to read books, including literature books, research books, etc., occurs in many social groups and different ages.

Speed reading, short reading, and thin book reading are also some of the criteria that young readers aim for and choose to optimize their lives.

In addition, in recent years, many websites and a series of TikTokers and Youtubers have created a new form of reading called radio books. It creates more interest in accessing books but through the auditory route, reducing visual fatigue when having to surf the internet too much on phones and computers.

The series of activities in response to Book and Reading Culture Day in Tien Giang province will be held at locations and times suitable for each activity organized by the host units (focusing on April 15 to May 2, 2025), with a number of messages: "Reading culture - Connecting the community", "Entering the era of national growth with books", "Reading books - enriching knowledge, nurturing aspirations, promoting innovation and creativity".

Until now, when mentioning libraries, people often think of rooms filled with books and paper documents.

In fact, the digital transformation trend is gradually changing the way traditional libraries operate, opening a new era in which paper books no longer hold a monopoly.

That method is the electronic library or also known as the digital library. Along with the electronic library, reading habits also begin to change, more and more people access the reading culture on digital platforms, especially the young.

Discussing solutions to develop reading culture in the digital transformation period, many experts have affirmed that it requires efforts from all levels and sectors with fundamental and synchronous solutions, but above all, it is the awareness of each citizen.

In order for reading to become a habit of every citizen, there needs to be close coordination between authorities, publishers, and book companies to participate in promoting activities to develop a reading culture in schools and communities.

SPREADING THE BEAUTY OF READING CULTURE

In order for Vietnam Book Day and Reading Culture to have a strong influence in community life, especially among young people, it requires the joint efforts and consensus of all levels, sectors, organizations, individuals, artists, intellectuals, the business community and the active participation and response of the people.

In order to encourage and develop reading culture in the community, every year, the Provincial People's Committee has issued a plan to organize Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day. In 2025, the Provincial People's Committee has issued a plan to organize the 4th Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in 2025 in Tien Giang province.

According to the plan, there are activities such as: Organizing Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in the school system, in the public library system, in the system of union members, team members and children of the province.

In particular, the “Reading Culture Ambassador” Contest and the Storytelling Contest about books in English will be organized. At the same time, the province will also launch response activities from book printing and publishing units; provincial departments, branches, sectors, and organizations; mobilize book donations, visit and give books to children in difficult circumstances who overcome difficulties to study well.

Director of Tien Giang Provincial Library Vo Nam Phuoc said that reading books is one of the fastest and most effective ways to access knowledge. Reading books regularly helps us to perfect our personality, helps us to recognize good values to behave in life, moral standards to be human, thereby forming positive thoughts, towards good values.

Reading helps to enrich knowledge, absorb world culture and enrich yourself. Regular reading also helps to stimulate the brain, improve concentration, enhance creative analytical thinking and help us live more positively.
