Despite all the efforts, this year's winter-spring rice crop of Mr. Ho Xuan Truong's family in Tram village, Huong Tan commune is once again at risk of crop failure.
I say “again” because this situation happens frequently and has been going on for many years. Mr. Truong’s family has about 0.5 hectares of rice fields. At the beginning of the season, rice cultivation went smoothly thanks to abundant irrigation water.
However, since February, the weather has been dry, and the irrigation water from the small stream running through has dried up. The fields are becoming dry and cracked due to lack of water; the rice plants that are about to flower do not grow, and in many places, the rice plants have burned to death.
Looking at the gradually drying rice field, Mr. Truong said: “This rice field is the source of life for my whole family. Last year, due to drought, 0.5 hectares of rice only yielded 50 kg of rice.
If there is no rain from now until the end of April, it will be considered a total loss. We, the people, only live on our fields, so we hope the government will pay attention and invest in building water pipes to bring water to our fields to create more favorable production conditions."
Not only Mr. Truong's family's rice fields, crop failure due to lack of water for production is a situation that has been happening to more than 55 hectares of rice fields of nearly 80 households in Tram village, Huong Tan commune. The reason is that there are no ponds or lakes to store water, crops are completely dependent on natural water sources. People here have always faced drought due to lack of water for production for a long time.
Talking to reporters, Party cell secretary and head of Tram village Ho Ngoc Quang said that the villagers are mainly ethnic minorities, and their income depends on rice cultivation. However, the lack of water for production over the past decades has hindered the people's business and economic development. It is known that on average, each year, the rice area of 80 households in Tram village only harvests 2.5 - 3 hectares/sao.
“The lack of water for production has been a long-standing concern of the local government and people. At many meetings with voters, people have also reported this situation and expressed their desire for it to be resolved soon to stabilize their lives.
Previously, many delegations came to inspect and survey the construction and installation of irrigation systems, but for many reasons, they have not been implemented yet. We hope that authorities at all levels will have solutions to overcome the drought situation in the rice fields in the village to help people produce more stably," said Mr. Quang.
Regarding this issue, a representative of the People's Committee of Huong Tan Commune said that the lack of water for production is inevitable because Tram Village currently lacks an irrigation system and is completely dependent on natural water sources. The commune has made efforts to temporarily overcome this situation but has not been effective.
In the long term, the most fundamental solution is still to invest in irrigation systems to ensure a sustainable source of irrigation water for agricultural production. The commune hopes to receive support from all levels to invest in irrigation works to provide irrigation water to help people produce stably and effectively.
