TPO - Binh Dong Communal House is a national historical and cultural relic, located in District 8 (HCMC). August 20 - is the 136th birthday anniversary of President Ton Duc Thang.
Binh Dong Communal House is located on Ba Tang Islet (Ward 7, District 8). Built before 1853 at the fork of the Doi Canal, Binh Dong Communal House is a familiar destination for local people, neighboring provinces and many tourists when coming to the city. The main gate is built in the style of a three-door gate, the roof of the communal house is "two dragons fighting for a pearl" which often appears in the architecture of communal houses and pagodas of the Vietnamese people. In front of the main hall is the Vo Ca house - where cultural and artistic activities take place during the communal house's festivals...
The communal house was originally a thatched house for local people to meet. After many renovations, in 1991, the communal house was rebuilt with heavy materials but still maintained the overall architectural features.
In 2017, a concrete bridge across this canal was completed, making it easier for locals and tourists to travel.
The communal house consists of the Vo Ca and the main hall in the middle, with the East and West corridors on both sides, and the Nghia Tu house next to it. The large courtyard is planted with many trees with three entrances all facing the canal.
The main hall has traditional architecture with altars, horizontal lacquered boards, and parallel sentences. The worship place in the main hall still preserves ancient artifacts such as the God's altar, the Left and Right Board, the Council, and the set of eight treasures.
The main hall of Binh Dong communal house is where secret letters sent from abroad by comrade Nguyen Ai Quoc and books and newspapers promoting Marxism-Leninism are safely kept.
In 1920, after returning to Saigon, comrade Ton Duc Thang and his comrades founded and led the Saigon Secret Union. This was the first union organization of the Vietnamese working class, marking a new transformation of the Vietnamese working class from an unorganized period to an organized period.
Thanks to the location of the Communal House on a deserted island, famous for its sacredness, the French soldiers were very afraid and did not dare to approach. Therefore, right at the Communal House, comrade Ton Duc Thang directed many activities of the Union without being detected by the enemy.
To commemorate the merits of President Ton Duc Thang, in 1991, officials, party members, civil servants and workers of District 8 contributed to building the President Ton Duc Thang Memorial House right on the grounds of Binh Dong communal house.
