The wild apricot trees (five-petal yellow apricot) were planted by teacher Phan Ba Le Hien, PhD, Vice Principal of Le Duan High School (Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak Province) from small apricot seeds nearly 30 years ago.
These five-petal yellow apricot trees attract admiration for their brilliant beauty every spring, carrying within them an inspiring story.
Three ancient wild apricot trees (five-petal yellow apricot) spread their canopy in the garden of teacher Phan Ba Le Hien in Buon Ma Thuot.
In a small alley in Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak Province, the wild apricot garden of teacher - Dr. Phan Ba Le Hien - Vice Principal of Le Duan High School - is a peaceful space with more than 50 apricot trees and many kinds of vegetables and flowers.
Most prominent are three ancient wild apricot trees, planted in 1997, which have overcome time to become "treasures" of the family and the whole neighborhood.
The journey from tiny wild apricot seeds to massive yellow apricot trees
In 1997, when he was a freshman, on a trip to a deep forest in the Central Highlands, Mr. Hien picked up wild apricot seeds that had fallen under a large wild apricot tree and brought them home to plant. Unexpectedly, from those tiny seeds, three wild apricot trees had grown into rare giants.
The canopy of wild apricot trees covers a corner of the garden, creating a peaceful and poetic space at the family of teacher Phan Ba Le Hien, PhD, Vice Principal of Le Duan High School (Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak Province).
Currently, two wild mai trees have a trunk circumference of 1m, are nearly 7m high, and have a canopy width of 8m, while the remaining tree has a circumference of 90cm and a canopy width of 5m.
Every spring, the apricot flowers bloom brilliantly yellow, decorating the peaceful space of the garden, making anyone passing by stop to admire.
In 2020, a businessman from Ho Chi Minh City came to his house and offered 700 million VND to buy three wild mai trees from Mr. Hien. However, Mr. Hien refused this attractive offer.
"Honestly, my family's economy was stable at that time, so there was no reason to rush to sell. Moreover, these apricot trees are not just ornamental plants, but a part of my soul, a part of my memories associated with my life," Mr. Hien shared.
He also revealed: "At that time, the neighbor's house had a large apricot tree similar to the largest tree in his garden, which was sold for 750 million VND.
So, if I sell all three trees for only 700 million, I don't think it's worth it. Therefore, I decided to keep them to continue taking care of them and preserve their value."
Massive wild apricot garden – the pride of the whole neighborhood
The three ancient wild apricot trees are not only a valuable asset of Mr. Hien but also the pride of the local people. Every Tet holiday, the garden full of yellow wild apricot flowers attracts the attention of neighbors and passersby.
The wild apricot trees in teacher Phan Ba Le Hien's garden bloomed with five-petal yellow apricot flowers in the spring of 2024.
Talking to a reporter from Dan Viet Newspaper, Mr. Tran Thanh Hieu (26 years old), a resident of Ea Tam ward, Buon Ma Thuot city, said: "These apricot trees are so beautiful, so big, taller than the roof. I often go to the spring flower market but have never seen such a special tree. Their value must be up to billions."
Accidentally passing by the garden of 5-petal yellow apricot blossoms of teacher Phan Ba Le Hien's family, seeing the massive wild apricot trees, Mr. Tran Thanh Hieu went in to observe and admire.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (60 years old), a neighbor of Mr. Hien, could not hide her emotion: "Every spring, the three wild apricot trees bloom like a new coat on the whole neighborhood, bringing a feeling of vitality. Anyone passing by must stop and look."
Not only taking care of three ancient wild apricot trees, Mr. Hien’s family also spends time nurturing more than 50 other apricot trees in the garden. Each tree is a source of pride, a testament to the perseverance and love of nature of the devoted teacher.
In addition to three ancient wild apricot trees, Mr. Hien's garden also has 50 large and small apricot trees of all kinds, mixed with a lush vegetable garden and other flowers and fruit trees.
"Caring for apricot trees requires meticulousness and true love. I hope that if they are transferred in the future, the owner will continue to cherish and spread their beauty," Mr. Hien confided.
To Mr. Hien, the three ancient wild apricot trees are not only ornamental plants but also symbols of patience and life lessons. They not only beautify the space but are also associated with precious memories, a living testament to a soul that loves nature and is constantly devoted to the teaching profession.
