A Dalat female student who went to school and collected scrap metal to earn money for college and affirmed that "there's nothing to be ashamed of while studying and earning money" has made readers love and admire her. Dozens of words of encouragement have been sent to Thuy.
Many emotions were shared by readers with the story of new student Nguyen Thi Thuy (18 years old, student of Law Faculty of Dalat University), the character in the article "Da Lat female student picks up a bag of scrap metal every day she goes to school: 'There's nothing to be ashamed of'" on Tuoi Tre 10-27.
Learn optimism and see the future of the determined girl
Before becoming a student, Thuy was an excellent student for 12 consecutive years, admired by her friends. Leaving her books behind, she followed her mother to collect scrap metal, pick up vegetables from harvested gardens or wild vegetables growing on abandoned land to sell at the market.
To have money to go to school, every day on the way to school, Thuy brings a bag full of scrap metal around the school and has no self-consciousness or inferiority complex "studying and earning money at the same time, there's nothing to be ashamed of" - Thuy thinks.
In 2021, Thuy's mother suffered a stroke while she was pregnant. Poverty became a hardship for Thuy's family. Thuy, the eldest sister, had to play the role of mother in the house to help her father take care of her younger siblings. Despite all the difficulties, Thuy still tried her best to get into Dalat University with convincing scores.
Fearing that Thuy would feel sorry for herself because of her hard work and not having a life like her friends, reader Thanh wrote a message to this Dalat female student through Tuoi Tre : "You should be proud of your child! Money is truly a measure of personality."
Sharing the same sentiment, reader Son wrote: “Try hard, daughter, you will succeed in the future. Not everyone dares to do that. Wish you always healthy”. Reader Nguyen Thanh Van expressed hope for Thuy: “In the future, your friends who are now happy will have to look up to this little girl who collects bottles”.
Reading the story, reader Tranh shared: “Thuy reminds me of myself whitewashing walls and working as a waiter for several years. Keep up the good work, young man, it’s normal in life.”
Reader Tran looked deeply into Thuy's inner strength and believed that this girl would have a bright future. Tran wrote: "Very good, very wonderful, very touching about a small girl but with an extraordinary will and determination, constantly striving in a life of poverty. In the future, who knows, this girl might become a famous billionaire. Everyone, please care and help this girl."
Reader Danh recognized in Thuy a strength enough to overcome life's challenges: "My daughter is very thoughtful, determined and emotional. I love her very much and appreciate what she has done, is doing and will do. Life is full of challenges, but I believe she will overcome them and be happy. Always keep the precious qualities that you have, my daughter, you are a precious gem."
Reader Tran hopes that other young people will look to Thuy to gain more energy to move forward: “I hope that students will overcome adversity to rise up. Only those who overcome adversity to assert themselves are virtuous, talented, and dare to think and dare to do.”
Reader Quy, a former student who received the Tuoi Tre newspaper's "Tiep suc den truong" scholarship, shared: "You are such a wonderful child! 15 years ago, I was also a student at Da Lat University and also received the "Tiep suc den truong" scholarship. Now my life is really good.
I still cherish the scholarship certificate from Tuoi Tre newspaper. I really thank the newspaper and the sponsor for helping many children like me continue to go to school."
Thuy gets tuition exemption and her mother gets medical support.
Doctor Nguyen Van Hieu (one of the 10 outstanding young Vietnamese faces in 2017), currently living in Da Lat, visited freshman Nguyen Thi Thuy and her mother.
After examination, Dr. Hieu said that her mother (Mrs. Bui Thi Lien) would recover 90% compared to a normal person if she changed her diet and exercise regimen.
“Recovering Ms. Lien is not difficult. I will support her family with medical care and medicine. Thuy's health is not good at the moment, she is small and lacks necessary nutrition. If the current situation continues, it will not be good for Thuy. I will also support Thuy to improve her health. I have told my family to regularly schedule check-ups and support her to improve her health,” said Dr. Hieu.
Regarding the case of new student Nguyen Thi Thuy, Mr. Le Minh Chien - Principal of Dalat University - said: "I will pay special attention to this student so that she can have good learning conditions. The school will consider granting scholarships when the deadline comes as well as exempting tuition fees. Please ask Tuoi Tre newspaper to inform the student so that she can proactively contact the school when she encounters difficulties that need to be resolved."
