According to the Central Hospital of Traditional Medicine, since 2015, with the support of the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund, the hospital has established two smoking cessation counseling rooms located in two units of the hospital, the Examination Department and the Quality Management Department, with the desire to minimize the harmful effects of tobacco and protect public health.
Medical staff provide information on the harmful effects of tobacco and advice on smoking cessation at the Central Hospital of Traditional Medicine.
After 8 years of implementation, the Central Hospital of Traditional Medicine has successfully helped thousands of smokers at home and abroad quit smoking.
MSc. Nguyen Tuong Linh, Deputy Head of the Quality Management Department, said that when patients come to quit smoking, doctors will advise them on two treatment methods: medication and non-medication. These methods help smokers "awaken" and forget their cravings for cigarettes.
According to Dr. Bui Duy Anh (Department of Smoking Cessation Support and Counseling, Central Hospital of Traditional Medicine), with the non-drug method, the doctor applies the method of ear acupuncture combined with Nguyen Van Huong breathing exercises.
In particular, auricular acupuncture is a method that affects the earlobe area on both sides to achieve the effect of disease prevention and treatment. The mechanism of auricular acupuncture to quit smoking is to regulate the blood, balance yin and yang to be able to cut off the dependence on cigarettes, as well as resolve the unpleasant symptoms caused by cigarettes. Nguyen Van Huong's breathing exercise method supports breathing exercises for smokers with obstructive pulmonary disease.
In the case of using smoking cessation medication, the quitter is prescribed by the doctor and instructed to use lozenges and tea (containing herbal ingredients such as mint, ginger, licorice) to support the treatment process and reduce withdrawal symptoms for the patient. In addition to the withdrawal symptoms of smoking including stimulation, restlessness, discomfort, irritability, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, there are other symptoms recorded after quitting smoking such as cough, dry mouth, sore throat, headache, nausea.
According to treating doctors, the two methods of smoking cessation implemented at the Central Hospital of Traditional Medicine are highly effective, and the number of patients coming to the hospital to quit smoking is increasing.
However, doctors note that success in quitting smoking and not relapse also depends largely on the determination of the smoker himself.
An assessment study at the Central Hospital of Traditional Medicine in 2020 - 2021 on the need for smoking cessation showed that, among individuals coming to quit smoking, men accounted for 91.43%. The average age of smoking was 32.56. The average number of years of smoking was 12.35, with some people having 20 years. The average level of smoking addiction accounted for 48.39%; the severe level accounted for 27.86% and the mild level accounted for 23.75%.
