UPU Letter Writing Competition 2025 Theme

Every year, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) organizes an international letter-writing competition for children, aiming to develop their writing skills and enrich their creative thinking.

The theme for the 2025 competition is: “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you.”

This is a topical topic that encourages students to demonstrate creativity and responsibility in protecting the environment, especially the oceans and water resources of the planet.

How to write a good and creative UPU 2025 letter

Clearly define the topic and message

First, students need to read the topic carefully to understand the requirements of the contest, then determine the main message you want to convey. An impressive letter is one that has creative content, a unique perspective and practical connections to life. Think about the negative impacts the ocean is facing, such as plastic pollution, climate change, overfishing... and at the same time propose solutions and calls for action.

Letter layout

A letter to participate in the UPU letter writing competition needs to have a clear layout, which can include three parts:

Introduction: Introduce the recipient and the reason for writing in a natural, engaging way. Students can write to a leader, a scientist, an environmental organization, or anyone interested in or influential in protecting the ocean.

Main content: Present your views on the topic using strong arguments and specific evidence. You can use real-life examples to illustrate ocean pollution and human impacts, and suggest measures that can be taken to protect the marine environment.

Conclusion: Emphasize the main message, expressing hope for a cleaner green future and calling on everyone to join hands to protect the ocean.

Use clear, creative language

To write an engaging letter, students need to ensure that their writing style is clear, emotional, and appropriate for the recipient. A good letter not only provides information but also touches the reader's emotions. Avoid clichés. Try to express your own personality through your writing. Students can become part of the ocean, telling their story from a natural perspective to create a strong impression.

Note on form and principles

In addition to content, presentation is also very important. Candidates must comply with the word limit as prescribed by the organizing committee (no more than 800 words); do not copy from other sources, ensure the originality of the article; carefully check spelling and grammar errors before submitting.

When participating, students should also pay attention to the rules, regulations, and time for receiving entries to have a valid entry.

According to the Organizing Committee, the contestants are Vietnamese students from 9 to 15 years old (at the time of submitting the contest entry letter). They need to ensure that they comply with the following regulations:

Firstly, the letter must be a creative product of the individual student, written in prose form on the theme of the contest (not yet published in a newspaper or book), no longer than 800 words.

Second, entries written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Vietnamese translation. The jury will judge according to the Vietnamese version.

Third, the entry letter must be clearly and neatly written by hand on one side of the paper (do not write on the back, you can write on multiple pages, number the pages, and staple them to avoid confusion). Typed or photocopied entries are not valid.

Fourth, in the upper left corner of the entry letter, the following information must be fully written: Full name, date of birth, ethnicity, school address, class, district (town), province (city), and phone number. Entry letters that do not fully include the above information are invalid.
