The 54th UPU International Letter Writing Competition in 2025 is not only a valuable platform but also helps students improve their writing skills, critical thinking, and ability to present their views persuasively.
The 2025 UPU International Letter Writing Competition offers students the opportunity to showcase their creativity and environmental responsibility. With the theme of embodying the ocean, students will write letters expressing their message about protecting the seas. The following guidelines can help students write engaging, persuasive, and creative UPU letters.
Theme of the UPU Letter Writing Competition 2025
Every year, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) organizes the International Letter Writing Competition for Children, aiming to contribute to the development of children's writing skills and the richness of their creative thinking.
The theme for the 2025 contest is: “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you.”
This is a timely topic that encourages students to demonstrate creativity and responsibility in protecting the environment, especially the oceans and water resources on the planet.
How to write a good and creative letter for the UPU 2025 competition.
Clearly define the theme and message.
First, students need to carefully read the topic to understand the competition requirements. Then, they should identify the main message they want to convey. An impressive letter is one that is creative, offers a unique perspective, and relates to real life. Think about the negative impacts the ocean is facing, such as plastic pollution, climate change, overfishing, etc., and offer solutions and calls to action.
Letter structure
A letter submitted to the UPU letter writing competition should have a clear structure, which can consist of three parts:
Opening: Introduce the recipient and the reason for writing in a natural and engaging way. Students can write to a leader, a scientist , an environmental organization, or anyone who cares about or influences ocean conservation.
Main content: Present your viewpoint on the topic with strong arguments and specific evidence. You can use real-world examples to illustrate the state of ocean pollution and its human impact, and suggest measures that need to be taken to protect the marine environment.
Conclusion: Emphasize the main message, express hope for a greener and cleaner future, and call on everyone to work together to protect the ocean.
Use clear and creative language.
To make the writing engaging, students need to ensure their writing style is clear, emotionally rich, and appropriate for the recipient. A good letter not only provides information but also touches the reader's emotions. Avoid clichés. Try to express your own personality through your writing style. Students can immerse themselves in the ocean, telling their story from nature's perspective to create a powerful impression.
Notes on form and principles
Besides content, presentation is also very important. Contestants must adhere to the word limit set by the organizers (no more than 800 words); not copy from other sources, ensuring the originality of the writing; and carefully check for spelling and grammar errors before submitting.
When participating, students should also pay attention to the rules, regulations, and submission deadlines to ensure their entries are valid.
According to the Organizing Committee, the contest is open to Vietnamese students aged 9 to 15 (at the time of submitting their entry). Participants must adhere to the following regulations:
Firstly, the letter must be the creative work of an individual student, written in prose on the theme of the competition (not previously published in newspapers or books), and no longer than 800 words.
Secondly, entries written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Vietnamese translation. The judging panel will evaluate based on the Vietnamese translation.
Third, the entry letter must be clearly and neatly written by hand on one side of the paper (note: do not write on the back side; you can write on multiple sheets, number the pages, and staple them together to avoid confusion). Typed or photocopied entries are not valid.
Fourth, in the upper left corner of the contest entry letter, you must include the following information: Full name, date of birth, ethnicity, school address, class, district (town), province (city), and phone number. Contest entries that do not include all of the above information will be considered invalid.
