VnExpressVnExpress01/09/2023

Drink alcohol in moderation at holiday parties to limit sore throats, avoid shouting too much, and avoid dehydration.

Many people experience sore throat, dry mouth, hoarseness, and headaches after drinking alcohol. Alcohol affects the immune system, allowing viruses to attack the body and irritate the throat. Dehydration is a common cause of sore throat or dry throat after drinking alcohol. Here's how to prevent this condition.

Moderate alcohol consumption : Alcohol can cause inflammation and irritation of the stomach lining, leading to vomiting. Stomach acid and alcohol reflux into the esophagus can damage the throat, causing a burning sensation the next day. People should avoid alcohol, and if they must drink, they should stop at the right time, within the limit that the body can tolerate.

Avoid dark wines: Dark wines are often high in congeners. Congeners are byproducts of the fermentation process that give wine its color and flavor. They can make a hangover worse and cause a sore throat after drinking.

Limit carbonated drinks : Carbonated drinks including beer and soft drinks can affect the nerves in the nose and mouth, causing burning or pain. Avoid combining alcohol with soda or mixing alcohol with soft drinks. Alcoholic drinks mixed with many mixtures or sparkling wine have a strange, attractive taste but are not good for the throat.

Stay hydrated : Alcohol has a diuretic effect, increasing urination frequency, causing dehydration. Dehydration due to alcohol often accompanies hangovers. The body is easily tired, has headaches, difficulty sleeping and dizziness the next day.

Avoid shouting : Drinking alcohol and shouting, speaking loudly can cause muscle tension or voice strain, injuring the throat, vocal cords, and causing pain.

Avoid smoke: People who drink and smoke are more likely to get a sore throat. Exposure to secondhand smoke can have similar effects.

To reduce sore throat, prioritize getting plenty of sleep after each drinking session. The body recovers quickly and heals while sleeping. Other ways include drinking water between drinks to promote hydration and reduce pain. Using a humidifier helps to add moisture to the air. Avoiding caffeinated drinks after drinking alcohol also reduces sore throat.

In case of sore throat accompanied by digestive disorders, fever, cold, patients should see a doctor soon, determine the cause and have appropriate treatment.
