Immediately after Ho Chi Minh City National University announced the program to attract, retain and develop 350 outstanding young scientists and leading scientists working at Ho Chi Minh City National University (VNU350 program), many member schools also built attractive remuneration policies and paid "huge" salaries to attract talented people.
Professor was paid 350 million VND when he returned to work at the school.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Vu Hai Quan - Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, the member schools of this university basically have a working environment that meets the needs of excellent scientists.
"Income at schools tends to increase. If Ho Chi Minh City National University and other units work together, they will certainly attract many talents," Mr. Quan affirmed.
According to Mr. Quan, in the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City National University will disburse about 100 million USD in loans from the World Bank to build the Innovation Center, the University of Health Sciences and a system of modern laboratories to serve training and research.
This is an extremely important condition to create systemic strength, thereby attracting excellent young people to work.
Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Cong Gia Khanh - Principal of the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - also said that last year, the school determined to apply policies so that scientists have a friendly and comfortable working space to focus on research and teaching.
"The school applies a one-time attraction policy of 350 million VND/person for professors, 250 million VND/person for associate professors, and 150 million VND/person for doctors.
Those are just numbers that show our determination at the time of inviting scientists to work. We realize that to retain scientists and for them to develop, we need a good space," Mr. Khanh emphasized.
According to Mr. Khanh, the school's policy offers two directions for developing scientists: appointing leaders at the department, faculty, and board of directors levels; experts with 3 levels, in which level 3 experts are treated equivalent to vice principals, level 2 experts are equivalent to department heads, and level 1 experts are equivalent to deputy department heads.
"Thus, scientists who are not leaders or managers still have appropriate remuneration to carry out their professional activities," Mr. Khanh added.
Pay based on job position and specific contributions
Associate Professor Dr. Mai Thanh Phong - President of the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said he highly appreciated the VNU350 program. This is also the aspiration, desire and goal of the member schools.
At the University of Technology, in addition to the general support policy of Ho Chi Minh City National University under the VNU350 program, the school also has a regime and policy to attract and retain talented people. The school's policy applies to all scientists who are currently working at the school and those who will work there.
"Recently, the school has implemented a new salary system, paying income based on job position and specific contributions: professors who complete their tasks well earn 60 million VND/month, associate professors 50 million VND/month, young doctors who have just started working at the school earn about 25 million VND/month. The school also supports working space for teachers," Mr. Phong added.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoang Tu Anh - Principal of the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said that in 2021, when the autonomy project was approved, the school immediately implemented a policy to attract PhDs with a salary of 35-55 million VND.
Since then, the average income of managers with a doctorate or higher at the school is about 60 million VND/month. Doctors who do not work in management earn about 35 million VND/month. If teachers participate in research projects, they will have higher incomes and live better lives.
"The VNU350 program will add momentum to the program our school is implementing. PhDs who return to work at the school, in addition to income, are also very concerned about the working environment.
Ho Chi Minh City National University is a place with a high sense of community and support. Member schools are interested in and support scientific research activities. This is truly a good working environment," said Ms. Tu Anh.
