European leaders welcome proposal for 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine

(Dan Tri) - European leaders welcomed the progress made in the US-Ukraine discussions held in Saudi Arabia, especially the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire.

According to European leaders, this is a positive signal for resolving the conflict, along with progress in the US resuming intelligence sharing and military support for Kiev.

European Council President Antonio Costa hailed the ceasefire proposal as "a positive development that could be a step towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine". He stressed that "the EU stands ready to play its full role, together with its partners, in the upcoming peace negotiations".

European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas welcomed the talks in Saudi Arabia, stressing not only the security and intelligence aspects but also the humanitarian aspect.

“As usual, the ball is in Russia's court,” she told X, affirming the EU's determination to support a “just and lasting peace”.

"The idea of ​​a 30-day ceasefire is an important and correct step towards a just peace for Ukraine. The decision on the next steps now depends on Russian President Vladimir Putin," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz posted on social network X on March 12.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock described the talks between the US and Ukraine as a "major turning point" in Ukraine's pursuit of lasting peace and security.

French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged the progress made in Jeddah and reaffirmed France's commitment to achieving a solid and lasting peace, backed by "strong security guarantees for Ukraine".

"The ball is clearly in Russia's court," President Macron asserted.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that "it seems that the United States and Ukraine have taken an important step towards peace", assuring that Europe is ready to support in reaching a just solution.

Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the US ceasefire proposal was "positive news". British Prime Minister Keir Starmer sent his "congratulations to President Trump and Zelensky for the remarkable breakthrough".

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also spoke out, calling the proposed ceasefire "an important step towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine" and saying: "Russia should respond to this ceasefire proposal". In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also said that the ceasefire now "depends on Russia".

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp called the joint statement by the US and Ukraine "an encouraging first step towards peace", stressing the importance of resuming security assistance and intelligence sharing for the sake of Ukraine's defense and European security in general.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot also stressed that the ceasefire could be a "big step forward if Russia accepts it" and called on Europe to participate in the next stages of the peace process. "Let us continue to work together as Europeans to create the conditions for a lasting and solid peace for the people of Ukraine," he urged.

These statements were made after the US and Ukraine issued a joint statement affirming that Kiev was "ready to accept a preliminary ceasefire" at the initiative of Washington. The ceasefire, which will last for 30 days, will take effect as soon as Russia agrees and can be extended for a longer period.

President Trump told reporters that he hoped Moscow would agree to the ceasefire plan and that there would be a meeting between Russia and the US later on March 12 or March 13.
