The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam and airlines have just held a meeting to consider increasing capacity to meet people's travel needs during the April 30 - May 1 holiday.
Accordingly, during the peak holiday period of April 30 and May 1, 2024, Vietnamese airlines will provide 100,000 to 110,000 seats per day on domestic routes, an increase of about 20% compared to the average in March 2024.
Vietnam Airlines said it will add more than 100 domestic and international flights, equivalent to more than 15,000 seats. The increase in operating capacity for the upcoming peak season is an effort by the airline to optimize the use of its existing fleet and open new flights in the early morning and late evening on some routes with high demand.
Thus, the airline will provide a total of 575,000 seats and 2,900 flights during the peak period from April 26 to May 2. Compared to the same period last year, the total number of domestic and international seats increased by more than 10% and 12%, respectively.
Tourist routes such as between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, Hue, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Phu Quoc, Con Dao... are the domestic routes with the highest increase in capacity. As for the international flight network, Vietnam Airlines focuses on flights to Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia. Currently, many flights to tourist destinations during peak season are 70% full.
Currently, the aviation industry is facing a shortage of aircraft. The main reason comes from engine manufacturers recalling aircraft engines for inspection and repair.
In addition, the global supply chain crisis and the shortage of aviation technical human resources after Covid-19 have caused a shortage of spare parts and prolonged periodic maintenance of aircraft engines.
In addition, airlines are facing the challenge of rising input costs. Fuel prices, which account for about 30% of total costs for airlines, are at a high level of over 100 USD. Aircraft rental prices and repair and maintenance service prices have also increased sharply.
In this context, to ensure flight supply to serve passengers during the upcoming holiday and summer peak season, Vietnam Airlines has coordinated with partners and relevant agencies to deploy a series of solutions from the end of 2023.
Specifically, Vietnam Airlines has proactively pushed forward its scheduled maintenance schedule to ensure resources are ready for peak season operations. The airline has also rearranged its flight schedule to optimize operations; increased resources, and focused on optimizing ground service procedures to reduce aircraft turnaround time.
Notably, the airline has increased the number of night and early morning flights to add more seats for sale, ensuring enough seats to serve people's travel needs. The total number of early morning and late evening flights in the peak summer month of 2024 is expected to increase by nearly 40% compared to the same period in 2023.
Regarding the fleet, Vietnam Airlines added wide-body aircraft to domestic operations to reduce the pressure of shortage of supply on the domestic flight network and wet-lease aircraft for the peak summer season. At the same time, the airline worked with manufacturers to advance the delivery schedule of Boeing 787-10 and Airbus A320NEO aircraft to promptly supplement supply.
Vietjet also said that to meet the needs of people and tourists, during the Hung Kings' death anniversary holiday week, April 30 and May 1, the airline will add 86,000 seats, equivalent to nearly 425 flights on tourist routes.
In addition, Vietjet also increased the frequency of flights to and from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang... during the summer, providing an additional 1.3 million seats to serve people and tourists.
Vietjet also focuses resources to increase flights, reduce turnaround time at airports and bring customers good price promotions.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, up to now, on domestic flights, passengers can still basically book tickets and there are many ticket prices to choose from to suit each passenger's conditions and travel needs.
The Civil Aviation Authority also recommends that passengers should develop travel plans early, purchase tickets through official ticket sales channels and proactively monitor information on airlines' operating plans to make appropriate arrangements and adjustments and choose reasonable ticket prices.
