Routes in the THACO Marathon for Traffic Safety in Dien Bien 2024

Athletes will run through the streets named after General Vo Nguyen Giap in Dien Bien Phu city.

Vo Nguyen Giap route is nearly 7km long, with a road surface width of 32m, starting from the beginning of Huoi Pha bridge (route 71+286) to the end of the concrete bridge bordering Dien Bien district (route 78+251.4).

This road passes through Him Lam, Tan Thanh, and Muong Thanh wards of Dien Bien Phu city, where fierce battles took place during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign.

The straight Vo Nguyen Giap road that athletes will have to run through at distances of 5km, 10km, 21km, 42km and 70km

In particular, Vo Nguyen Giap Street passes through the Dien Bien Provincial Administrative Center and many historical sites that testify to the historic Dien Bien Phu victory, such as the Him Lam resistance cluster, hills A1, E1, E2, D1 where the Dien Bien Phu victory monument is located, and cemetery A1 - the resting place of 600 heroes and martyrs who sacrificed their lives, contributing to the historic victory that resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world.

Along Vo Nguyen Giap Street, athletes will run through a 1.4km route named after General Hoang Van Thai. He was a man with great contributions in the war against French colonialism and was the first Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, contributing to many important campaigns such as the 1950 Autumn-Winter Border Campaign and the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (1954).

Hoang Van Thai Street is about 1.4km long, the roadway is about 9m wide, the sidewalk is 3m wide.

Next, the athletes running the 42 km and 70 km distances will follow the route running along Muong Phang - Dien Bien to Ban Muong, go straight on Muong Phang - Dien Bien, turn right to Ban Nghiu, follow the trail to Pu Nhi, still follow the mountain road to Thanh Xuong commune.

In the afternoons, athletes practice running marathons on the streets of Dien Bien city.

The route from Muong Phang runs through the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Headquarters - the workplace of General Vo Nguyen Giap. 70 years ago, General Vo Nguyen Giap and the Campaign Headquarters issued important and decisive attack orders and directives, culminating on May 7, 1954, the order for a general offensive on the entire front, creating the resounding Dien Bien Phu Victory.

Highway 279B is also paved with asphalt to help athletes run more easily.

Mr. Lo Van Hop, Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Phang Commune, Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien Province shared: "We are very happy that the Dien Bien Traffic Safety Marathon 2024 is held locally. This is also an opportunity to promote and educate the younger generation about the tradition of patriotism, national pride, and deep gratitude to the martyrs who sacrificed their blood for the cause of national liberation. Athletes coming here will experience unique features in a cultural space imbued with national identity, and explore many majestic and poetic landscapes of the Northwest region."

The Dien Bien Phu Campaign Headquarters is hidden in the old forest at the foot of Pu Don Mountain in Muong Phang Commune, nearly 40 km from Dien Bien Phu City. This is where General Vo Nguyen Giap and his comrades from the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Headquarters often worked and rested. This is also the route that the athletes running the 70 km distance had to run through.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dien Bien province, said that the 2024 Dien Bien Traffic Safety Marathon is a practical activity to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024); 115th anniversary of the establishment of Dien Bien province (June 28, 1909 - June 28, 2024), National Tourism Year - Dien Bien Phu 2024.

Through this race, we aim to promote the movement of the whole population to exercise following the example of the great Uncle Ho, improve the stature and physical strength of Vietnamese people, contribute to building and protecting the Fatherland, promote and introduce the land, people, culture and history of Dien Bien province, and bring the image of Dien Bien tourism closer to domestic and international tourists.

Coming to the Race, athletes will have the opportunity to visit historical sites and scenic spots, experience the unique beauty of a cultural space imbued with national identity, explore many majestic and poetic scenes of the Northwest mountains and forests; contribute to expanding cooperation, cultural and sports exchanges, tourism between Dien Bien province and other provinces in the country and international tourists. At the same time, raise community awareness of preserving and protecting the natural environment, and voluntarily complying with the law when participating in traffic.

The race is a reminder for organizations and individuals working on traffic safety to be persistent, tenacious, and serious, just like they are trying to conquer the marathon distance," said Mr. Hiep.

Athletes running in the 70km distance will run over Pa Khoang suspension bridge.

As reported by Giao Thong Newspaper at 11:00 a.m. on April 10, from the tomb of General Vo Nguyen Giap in Vung Chua - Yen Island (Quang Binh province), carrying a version of the "Determination to Fight - Determination to Win" flag to the Command Center in Dien Bien Phu (Dien Bien province). The THACO Marathon for Traffic Safety in Dien Bien 2024 will officially start from April 10-14, 2024.
