AI supports administrative procedures
Today marks the official start of the Healthcare Technology Summit (HLTH), which is expected to attract more than 12,000 leaders from around the world. Themed from October 20-23, the conference will showcase healthcare tools and solutions that can greatly support the medical industry.

Doctors and nurses often have to deal with huge volumes of documents, including patient records, dealing with insurance companies and complying with regulations. Often, these tasks are manual, in part because health data is fragmented and stored across many different vendors and formats.
According to consulting firm Mercer, excessive administrative workload is the main cause of burnout in the healthcare industry and that is why the healthcare industry is expected to have a shortage of 100,000 healthcare workers by 2028. For this reason, tech companies hope to gain a piece of the market that could reach $6.8 trillion in spending (US) by the end of the decade thanks to AI tools.
For example, Google is expanding its healthcare customer base by tackling administrative burdens with AI.

The company announced Thursday the availability of its Vertex AI Search for Healthcare app, which was introduced in beta at HLTH last year. Vertex AI Search for Healthcare lets developers build tools to help doctors quickly find information across disparate medical records. New features in Google’s Healthcare Data Engine that help organizations build the foundation needed to support next-generation AI are also now available.
A Google survey found that clinicians spend nearly 28 hours a week on administrative tasks. In the survey, 80% of providers said this clerical work takes up a lot of their time with patients, and 91% said they feel positive about using AI to streamline these tasks.
Similarly, Microsoft on October 11 announced a suite of tools aimed at easing the administrative workload of clinicians, including medical imaging models, a healthcare agent service, and an automated documentation solution for nurses, much of which is still in the early stages of development.
AI notes and summarizes clinical symptoms of diseases
Meanwhile, Microsoft offers an automated documentation tool for doctors through its subsidiary Nuance Communications, which it acquired in a $16 billion deal in 2021. The tool, called DAX Copilot, uses AI to transcribe doctors’ appointments with patients and turn them into clinical notes and summaries. Ideally, this means doctors don’t have to type out these notes themselves.

Nurses and doctors complete different types of documents during their shifts, so Microsoft is building a dedicated tool for nurses that fits their workflow.
AI secretarial tools like DAX Copilot have grown in popularity this year, and Nuance competitors like Abridge, which has reportedly raised over $460 million, and Suki, which has raised $165 million, will also be present at the HLTH conference.
The pace at which the healthcare industry is adopting this new form of clinical documentation is “historic,” said Dr. Shiv Rao, founder and CEO of Abridge. Abridge has received a coveted investment from Nvidia’s venture arm.
Nvidia is also gearing up to tackle the workload of doctors and nurses at HLTH. Kimberly Powell, the company’s vice president of healthcare, is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on Monday explaining how next-generation AI will help healthcare professionals “spend more time on patient care.”
HLTH takes place from October 20 to October 23 in Las Vegas, USA.
Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) are used to create and deploy the models that power OpenAI’s ChatGPT and similar applications. As a result, Nvidia has become one of the main beneficiaries of the AI boom. Nvidia’s stock is up more than 150% this year, and its stock has tripled in the past year.
The company has made steady inroads into healthcare in recent years, offering a range of AI tools for medical devices, drug discovery, genomics and medical imaging. Nvidia also announced expanded partnerships with companies like Johnson & Johnson and GE HealthCare in March.
While the healthcare industry has historically been slow to adopt new technology, the progress around administrative AI tools has been undeniable since ChatGPT burst onto the scene two years ago.
However, many health systems are still in the early stages of evaluating tools and vendors, and they will be visiting exhibit booths at HLTH.
Tech companies will have to prove their ability to solve one of the most complex problems in healthcare.
HLTH is the #1 healthcare innovation event, where industry leaders and senior executives from across the healthcare ecosystem gather to make real, meaningful, impactful connections that drive growth. With a focus on personalized experiences, HLTH offers multiple ways for attendees to focus on what specifically matters to their goals.
