“AI is a very important technology that needs to be regulated, but it is equally important to have the right regulations,” said Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry Demis Hassabis.
On December 7, Nobel Prize winners in Physics Geoffrey Hinton and Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry Demis Hassabis called for strict regulation of artificial intelligence (AI), the technology that plays an important role in their awards.
Speaking at a press conference in Stockholm, Sweden, Mr. Hassabis affirmed: “AI is a very important technology that needs to be regulated, but it is equally important to have the right regulations.”
According to him, the current difficulty is that AI is developing too quickly and questions need to be answered such as what to use AI for and how to deploy it. He also made it clear that it is necessary to ensure that all of humanity will benefit from what AI can create.
Mr. Hassabis is co-author of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with two American chemists David Baker and John Jumper for their work in revealing the secrets of proteins through AI.
Mr. Hassabis said he advised governments to develop regulations for areas such as health care and transportation, and to closely monitor technological developments to have timely adaptation measures to possible challenges.
In addition, he also discussed with billionaire Elon Musk about the "existential threats" caused by the inappropriate use of AI and it is known that billionaire Elon Musk himself is also concerned about the risk of AI taking control of humans.
Not only the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry Hassabis, the "father of AI" - Mr. Geoffrey Hinton - also acknowledged the potential risks from AI.
“I wish I had thought about safety earlier,” he said. Mr. Hinton worries that AI could accelerate the arms race.
Mr. Hinton made headlines when he left Google in 2023 and warned of the dangers of machines surpassing humans one day. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics with American John Hopfield for his work on artificial neural networks./.
