What is roselle?
Hibiscus sabdariffa is a precious medicinal herb originating from West Africa. Hibiscus sabdariffa improves digestive system, reduces blood pressure, treats coughs, clears heat, detoxifies, and regulates blood glucose.
Roselle is an annual plant, 1.5 - 2m tall. The plant branches at the base, the stem is light purple-red, the leaves are intact, the leaf blade is ovate and the edge has small serrations.
Flowers grow in leaf axils, without stalks, pinkish yellow or purple. Capsule, ovoid.
The whole roselle plant can be used as a medicinal herb to support the treatment of high blood pressure and obesity.
Medicinal remedies from roselle plant
Health & Life Newspaper quoted Traditional Medicine Practitioner Bui Dac Sang - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Hanoi Oriental Medicine Association, instructing some medicinal recipes from hibiscus as follows:
- Hibiscus tea
Effects: Detoxification, cooling, lowering blood pressure, diuretic, laxative, reducing blood fat and weight loss.
How to make: Wash 70 grams of fresh hibiscus flowers, 30 grams of dried hibiscus flowers, put them in a pot with 650 - 700ml of boiling water, steep for 3-5 minutes then filter the water. To add flavor, you can add a little sugar, stir well and use as a substitute for daily tea.
- Dishes from roselle leaves
Effect: Diuretic, sedative.
Lesson 1 - Use in Vietnam: Young roselle leaves, in varying amounts, are used to cook sour soup with fish, chicken or pork.
Lesson 2 - Used in Southern Europe: Use enough roselle leaves and enough fish to cook fish soup.
- Whole plant cures high blood pressure
Use the whole roselle plant 10g, decoct and drink daily.
- Remedies from flower calyx
+ Support lowering blood sugar: 02g dried hibiscus flower, decoct to drink or soak to drink instead of tea.
+ Anti-obesity: 10g roselle tea, brew and drink after meals.
