The rural landscape of Giao Thuy district is changing every day.

In 2018, Giao Thuy was recognized by the Prime Minister as a district meeting the standards of the New Rural Development program. Recognizing that "Building New Rural Areas is a regular, continuous task with no end point," the Party Committee, government, and people of the district continue to implement measures to improve the quality of New Rural Development criteria according to the national criteria set for the 2021-2025 period.

With the involvement of the entire political system, Giao Thuy district's advanced new rural development program has achieved many outstanding results.

According to Nguyen Tien Tung, Standing Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Giao Thuy district, to date, the entire district has 16 communes that have achieved advanced new rural area standards, 14 communes that have achieved model new rural area standards, and 157 out of 195 hamlets and residential areas that have achieved model new rural area standards…

With the motto "The people need - the people know - the people discuss - the people do - the people supervise - the people benefit" and "The people do the work, the State supports," many socio-economic infrastructure projects in the district have received comprehensive and focused investment. As a result, the appearance of rural areas has been transformed, becoming increasingly spacious, clean, and beautiful, and the material and spiritual lives of the people have been improved.

Agricultural production developed steadily and sustainably. The value of production per hectare of cultivated land reached 138.57 million VND, an increase of 25 million VND compared to 2017.

The OCOP program has been implemented vigorously, achieving good results and having a strong ripple effect. To date, the entire district has 105 OCOP products ranked 3 stars or higher, including 9 products that have achieved 4 stars.

Along with that, industrial and handicraft production developed rapidly, creating jobs and stable income for local people. As a result, people's lives have improved, and per capita income has increased significantly compared to the early period of implementing the New Rural Development program.

"By the end of 2023, the average per capita income in Giao Thuy district reached 84.46 million VND/person/year, more than four times higher than in 2010," Mr. Nguyen Tien Tung happily announced.

According to Mr. Tung, in 2023, the poverty rate in Giao Thuy district was 1.07%; the near-poverty rate was 3.01%. The rate of people participating in health insurance reached 95.80% in 2023, an increase of 9.86% compared to 2017.

By July 2024, the percentage of households using clean water from centralized water supply systems reached over 94%. The percentage of household solid waste collected and treated according to regulations increased by 6% compared to 2017.

The street lighting system has been upgraded with cast iron poles, separate tubular poles, LED lights, and underground wiring along the roads; 180 out of 182 hamlets have been recognized as cultural hamlets, and the percentage of families achieving the title of cultural family is 94%...

Leveraging the advantages of agricultural production.

As a coastal district, Giao Thuy has many advantages in developing its agricultural sector. In recent years, the district has identified three staple crops – rice, peanuts, and potatoes – and two aquatic products – clams and shrimp – as its key agricultural products.

To enhance economic value, Giao Thuy is promoting the transformation of agricultural production methods from self-sufficiency to commodity production, applying science and technology to production.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Tung, Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Giao Thuy district, shared that in agriculture, the trend of internal sectoral shifts basically ensures the goal of restructuring and developing the potential and strengths of each field, especially the advantages in developing aquaculture.

The district has also established several concentrated agricultural commodity production areas applying high technology; developing forms of production organization towards value chain linkages, ensuring food hygiene and safety.

Furthermore, it is essential to effectively implement policies supporting agricultural and rural development to mobilize all resources from society to invest in production development, achieving the goal of agricultural restructuring towards increased added value and sustainable development, in conjunction with the New Rural Development program…

In addition, strengthening trade promotion and building product brands will create linkages in the production, processing, preservation, and consumption of high-value products with development potential.

According to this source, the district's cultivated area remains above 9,000 hectares annually; the total grain production consistently exceeds 93,000 tons. Many areas of low-yield rice land have been converted to annual and perennial crops, as well as rice-fish farming models, yielding 1.5 to 3 times higher returns compared to rice cultivation.

In particular, livestock and poultry farming has developed steadily, with a strong shift from household farming to concentrated farm-based farming, applying technological advancements to production.

The aquaculture sector will focus on developing farming in planned areas, following an intensive farming approach and applying high technology; gradually reducing the proportion of production and fishing vessels in coastal areas, and focusing on developing marine aquaculture and key aquaculture species with high economic value.

"The locality continues to implement the mechanisms and policies of the province and district on supporting the development of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, contributing to promoting agricultural development in the district in a focused, sustainable, and economically efficient manner," Mr. Tung emphasized.

On August 2, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang signed Decision No. 761/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister recognizing Giao Thuy district as having achieved advanced new rural standards in 2023.
