Both the captain and co-pilot fell asleep for 28 minutes in the middle of the flight.

A preliminary report by Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) said the captain and co-pilot slept at the same time for about 28 minutes on a Batik Air flight from Southeast Sulawesi to the capital Jakarta on January 25, according to AFP.

A report on the incident was also posted on the website of Indonesian authorities in late February.

Batik Air is an Indonesian airline.

Indonesia is a vast archipelago with poor aviation safety records, despite relying heavily on air transport to connect its thousands of islands.

The report said one of the pilots did not get enough rest the night before the flight.

The incident resulted in a series of navigation errors but the 153 passengers and four flight attendants on the Airbus A320 were unharmed during the 2-hour, 35-minute flight.

About half an hour after takeoff, the captain asked the first officer to take a break and asked for permission. The first officer then took control of the plane but also accidentally fell asleep.

"The co-pilot has one-month-old twins. His wife takes care of the babies and he also helps with housework," the report said.

Minutes after the last recorded transmission by the co-pilot, the regional control center in Jakarta attempted to contact the plane but received no response.

Twenty-eight minutes after the last recorded transmission, the captain awoke to find his colleague had fallen asleep and the plane was not on track.

He immediately woke up his colleagues, answered calls from Jakarta and adjusted the flight path, the report said.

The plane circled for 28 minutes.
