“After I finish this painting, on the day of the National Mourning, please use it as my profile picture, Mom” - this is the confession of student Do Viet Dung, class 7A1, Ha Hoa Secondary School, Ha Hoa town, Ha Hoa district to his mother, Ms. Bui Thi Phuong Hoa, zone 1, Ha Hoa town. It is a special painting depicting General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Do Viet Dung and his portrait of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong
Chi Phuong Hoa confided: “Recently, through the mass media, I learned that the General Secretary’s health was not good. I also spent a lot of time paying attention, reading information and also confiding and talking to Dung. On the day the General Secretary passed away, I also talked to him. After we talked, he told me that he wanted to draw a portrait of the General Secretary and wanted me to use it as his profile picture on Facebook on the day of the National Mourning.”
Said and done, after dinner Dung returned to his room, came up with ideas and sketched the first strokes. It took him a whole afternoon to frame the picture, then Dung started to go into every little detail. The picture was completed in about 10 hours. What was special was that Dung made the picture on cellophane. “After a few days, I saw him borrow the phone and tell his mother to wait and see the work. My whole family was quite excited. When the phone light was turned on, shining on the picture he had just made, gradually every line on the General Secretary's face appeared on the wall. The whole family was moved,” Ms. Hoa shared.
When asked about the idea of painting on cellophane, Dung said that he had never been to any art school, he felt that painting on paper was quite normal and wanted to explore more unique and creative ways of expression. For him, to complete a painting on cellophane, he needed to be meticulous and careful. If he drew on paper, each wrong stroke could be erased or redrawn, but on cellophane instead of using a pen, he used a paper cutter to draw scratches to create shapes, if he made a small mistake, it would affect the entire frame and details.
“Painting on cellophane covers is a way of using scratches when a light shines through, blocking the light to create light and dark patches to create shapes. The scratches are white, but when painted, they are black, so during the drawing process, you have to use your imagination to see which strokes when the light shines through will create what shape,” Dung said.
One special thing is that when the finished painting is still just a transparent copy, it is difficult to see and visualize what the painting is about. To see these drawings, you have to shine a light on the drawing on a white background in a dark space. An extremely creative way of drawing, the paintings are very attractive and attract viewers.
Just a boy growing up, through his mother's stories, through the information he read and watched on newspapers and radio, Dung already knew and had feelings for the country's leaders. The portrait of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is his way of expressing his love, respect and gratitude for the highest leader of our Party and State. Before that, Dung had also drawn a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh through this unique way of drawing.
This morning, along with the people of the whole country, Ms. Hoa's family also took the time to watch the funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and keeping the promise to her son, her profile picture was replaced with a special painting drawn by her son. That is the way for her family to remember General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong with deep respect and gratitude.
