MD.CKII Phan Van Thai: 'I am happy in every surgery at FV Hospital'

As one of the first Vietnamese doctors to work at FV Hospital, Dr. Phan Van Thai - Head of General Surgery Department said that he chose FV because the leadership always paid close attention, trusted and empowered him and the members of the 'FV family' to continuously develop and carry out the mission of caring for and treating patients.

Dr. Phan Van Thai decided to join FV based on both infrastructure and superstructure factors. In which, the superstructure is the culture of fairness.

After graduating from high school with a fair amount of French, Phan Van Thai decided to enroll in Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. He graduated in 1998 with excellent results.

In 2003, when he joined the General Surgery Department of FV Hospital, Dr. Thai studied and worked closely with French department heads. They were teachers who deeply influenced the young doctor's lifelong learning mindset, standards and sense of fairness.

From Dr. Thai's perspective, at FV Hospital, all employees are respected and treated fairly, and every effort, no matter how small, is recognized and honored. Another valuable cultural trait that the doctor cherishes is seriousness expressed in the aspect of respecting the truth. The culture of being open-minded, listening, and willing to admit mistakes becomes the "compass" that guides the FV team to improve every day.

Over the past 22 years, Dr. Thai has been one of the "leading birds" who joined hands with French doctors to build the General Surgery Department from the very beginning.

During the years of passionate study and dedication with respected teachers and brothers, Dr. Thai had much respect for the former head of the department, Pierre Joseph Dumas. In his memory, Mr. Dumas was associated with a profound vision and a spirit of continuous learning.

Looking back on his two decades of working at FV, Dr. Thai emphasized that his decision to join FV was the right one. He and the General Surgery Department have always been invested in modern equipment and machinery, along with a team of well-trained, highly skilled and dedicated doctors and nurses to develop together into one of the key specialties of FV Hospital.

"I feel happy in every surgery at FV. I love FV and I choose FV," Dr. Thai emphasized.

Over the past 22 years, Dr. Phan Van Thai has successfully performed surgery to save the lives of thousands of patients, including hundreds of cases of stomach, colorectal, liver, gallbladder, pancreatic cancer... Notably, he successfully treated a patient with 3C colon cancer that had metastasized to the intestines and uterus. This was a case that doctors in several other Southeast Asian countries had previously been "unable to treat".

Thanks to constantly updating medical advances and applying new techniques, Dr. Thai and his team of doctors at the General Surgery Department can accurately detect and effectively treat surgical diseases, including surgery on the digestive system (intestines, liver, colon, pancreas, gallbladder, stomach and thyroid); treatment of inflammatory diseases, obstructions...

"One of the techniques I want to emphasize is the treatment of low rectal cancer, near the anus. If in the past, most patients were prescribed anal resection and permanent abdominal colostomy, now we use the technique of accurately measuring the tumor margin, applying preoperative radiotherapy and meticulous surgical techniques for treatment. This method both adheres to the principles of cancer treatment and helps patients retain their natural excretory function, ensuring quality of life later on," Dr. Thai shared.

For cancer patients, the treatment process requires multimodality, which can combine many methods of surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy... However, which "weapon" to use first, high/low dose, application at which stage... is a whole treatment strategy that requires investment of time, knowledge and dedication. As a multidisciplinary hospital, at FV, cancer treatment models are deeply specialized. A team of leading multidisciplinary doctors consult together, giving personalized treatment regimens, contributing to increasing the success rate in cancer treatment.

In addition, Dr. Thai regularly performs gastric bypass surgery to effectively treat many obese patients.

After more than two decades working at FV, Dr. Phan Van Thai has become one of the most prominent names in the field of surgery. He admits that his current abilities are the result of tireless training. For him, skillful hands, nerves of steel, an organizational mind, and a programming eye - the ability to observe and propose solutions on the operating table - are not enough to describe the qualities required of a surgeon. A surgeon needs to be both dedicated and hard-working to "live and die" in his profession.

"Helping patients recover is an endless joy. And the love of patients has become a great strength, helping me not to falter throughout my medical career," the doctor confided.
