On August 30, Brazil's Supreme Court ordered a complete block on Elon Musk's social network X after the company announced it would not comply with previous court orders.
Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered a nationwide shutdown of billionaire Elon Musk's social network X. Judge Alexandre de Moraes also ordered daily fines for users or businesses in the country who use virtual private networks (VPNs) or other means to access X.

Initially on the government website, the court announced that the suspension order would take effect immediately until billionaire Elon Musk's company complies with the decisions and pays the fine, as well as appoints a domestic representative.
However, a few hours later, the court issued a second order to invalidate some of the measures in the first order. Judge de Moraes initially gave companies like Apple and Google five days to block X from being downloaded from the App Store and Google Play, and to stop providing VPN apps to access X. The second order removed the five-day deadline and also postponed the implementation until further notice to give X time to pay the fine and provide legal representation.
Earlier, on August 28, the Brazilian Supreme Court gave Musk and X 24 hours to appoint a legal representative for their business operations in the country or face suspension. The deadline passed on the evening of August 29.
Brazilian law requires social media companies operating locally to have staff to handle government requests to remove content, including fake news and incitement to violence. X has no such representative in Brazil.
Brazil’s suspension of social network X could spell trouble for Musk’s already struggling company. The country has more than 171 million active social network users, according to strategy consultancy Oosga.
Billionaire Elon Musk lashed out at Judge de Moraes in a series of tweets after a court decided to freeze the finances of Starlink, the satellite internet service provided by his SpaceX, in Brazil. The court fined X for allegedly violating Brazilian law and froze Starlink’s finances to ensure those fines were paid.
