Durian products push fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first 6 months of 2023 to nearly equal the whole year of 2022. Finding effective solutions to stimulate demand and expand the market for seasonal fruits.

Order fulfillment

Busy preparing for export orders, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vina T&T Group, said: Currently, China is stepping up the purchase of many types of Vietnamese fruits, especially durian. These days, businesses regularly pack goods for export to China. This year, the business has signed a contract to export 1,500 containers (each container 15 tons) of durian to a Chinese partner. Up to this point, the business has paid about 30% of the order.

“Durian is harvested in batches, so if it is ripe, it will be exported in large quantities and vice versa. However, at this time, there is not enough goods to pay for orders from partners,” said Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung.

In addition to China, fruit and vegetable exports to other markets such as the US, Australia and the EU all recorded an increase of 5-10% over the same period last year.

Similarly, Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company is also busy preparing lychee export orders to Japan, Germany, the UK, the Middle East, etc. Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company, said that in the Japanese market, this year, the company expects to export an increase of about 30-50% of lychee compared to the same period last year. In addition, durian exports to Japan also grew well.

Durian is considered the growth driver of the fruit and vegetable industry in the first 6 months of 2023.

Not only exporting lychees to traditional markets, many businesses have recently opened new markets such as the UK and the US. Lychees and seedless lychees from Vietnam are sold on supermarket shelves in the UK for 400,000-800,000 VND/kg.

Meanwhile, fresh lychee shipments from Vietnam were also sold simultaneously at many of the largest Asian supermarkets and markets in June 2023 such as Hong Kong, Tan Binh, Viet Hoa, Linda's Tropical Fruits, Ca Mau, etc.

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports in the first half of 2023 have shown many improvements. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the first 6 months of the year reached a value of nearly 2.8 billion USD, a sharp increase of 64% over the same period last year.

In June 2023 alone, fruit and vegetable exports are estimated to bring in nearly 950 million USD, an increase of 2.6 times compared to June 2022. The export results of June far surpassed the record figure in May with nearly 560 million USD. Among the items, durian grew the most, followed by dragon fruit, banana, mango, jackfruit... In addition, there are watermelon and lychee.

In terms of market structure, China is still the number 1 import market. In the first half of the year, the Chinese market accounted for nearly 59% of the market share, followed by the US, followed by Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, Thailand, Taiwan, etc.

Will reach 5 billion USD

According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the first 6 months of 2023, fruit and vegetable exports became a bright spot in the agricultural sector when most export items tended to grow well. In particular, durian exports to China saw an explosion of orders.

"If we are granted additional codes for growing areas and packaging facilities, the export quota for durian to China will reach about 400-500 thousand tons, then this year this fruit can earn about 1.5 billion USD," Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen shared.

Regarding dragon fruit, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Trinh - Chairman of Long An Dragon Fruit Association acknowledged that dragon fruit export is much more favorable than previous years thanks to China's strong demand. The reason is that China's dragon fruit output is decreasing due to drought, so they import more to meet domestic consumption demand.

“Dragon fruit can regain its position as a billion-dollar fruit. Since the end of last year, the selling price of dragon fruit has always been higher than the cost price, making farmers profitable. With an average selling price of VND20,000/kg, farmers earn about VND400 million/ha/year,” said Mr. Nguyen Quoc Trinh.

In addition, banana exports last year only reached 311 million USD, but this year, the export trend to markets such as China, Japan, Korea... has increased sharply. Therefore, banana exports are expected to earn about 700-800 million USD.

Assessing the export potential in the second half of 2023 and the following years, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association commented that many types of Vietnamese fruits are currently entering the harvest season and have the characteristic of spreading out the seasons, so this year's fruit and vegetable exports are assessed to still have a lot of potential.

According to statistics, in the second quarter of 2023, the country's fruit output is estimated to reach over 2.6 million tons. Of which, bananas are about 460 thousand tons, mangoes are 350 thousand tons, durians are 300 thousand tons, dragon fruit is 250 thousand tons, lychees are 330 thousand tons, pineapples are 217 thousand tons, longans are 110 thousand tons, oranges are 180 thousand tons... It is forecasted that in the third and fourth quarters of 2023, there will be nearly 7.6 million tons of main fruits that need to be consumed such as: mangoes, bananas, dragon fruits, pineapples, oranges, lychees, longans, durians, jackfruit, avocados... Thus, it can be seen that the fruit supply is and will be very abundant, meeting export orders well in the coming time.

“Fruit and vegetable exports have reached nearly 3 billion USD in just the first 6 months of 2023. Meanwhile, we still have a large source of durian in the Central Highlands, which will not bear fruit for another month, and the crop season will last until the end of the year. Thus, with this growth momentum, it is forecasted that in the second half of 2023, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover will reach 5 billion USD. This number is almost within reach,” Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen affirmed.
