On April 19, speaking to the press about the fact that some hospitals had bid to buy fake milk products to serve nutritional needs for patients, Mr. Ha Anh Duc, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) stated that the recent situation of fake drugs and fake milk is a very painful problem in society.
Early next week, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment will issue a document requesting hospitals to review, including who they sold to and when; if the use of food and medicine related to fake milk or fake medicine affects the health of patients, the medical facility must take responsibility. "The Ministry of Health's viewpoint is to handle it strictly, not cover it up, and there are no forbidden areas if there are violations," Mr. Ha Anh Duc affirmed.
Regarding clinical nutrition guidelines in hospitals, Mr. Ha Anh Duc said that the Ministry of Health has developed guidelines on clinical nutrition expertise and in the coming time, the Ministry of Health will specify them to provide more detailed instructions to medical staff as well as patients.
Meanwhile, Mr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that the appearance of fake milk, fake medicine and functional foods in some hospitals has caused confusion among the people. For the past 3 years, Bach Mai Hospital has completely stopped selling functional foods in the hospital pharmacy; at the same time, it has banned doctors from prescribing and advising on the use of functional foods, even in the form of external introductions.
Regarding milk management, the Director of Bach Mai Hospital said that clinical nutrition and patient care are also considered "medicine" in the treatment regimen. Therefore, in recent times, the hospital has strengthened clinical nutrition control in the direction of individualization, each patient has a separate menu built according to their health status, controlling each meal, sugar, protein, and fat content.
The hospital is also reviewing whether or not its doctors and pharmacists are involved in advertising functional foods and health protection foods. “In response to the news that nearly 600 fake milk products were busted by the police, Bach Mai Hospital has reviewed the entire supply system and hospital pharmacies, and initially has not discovered any products related to the production and trade of fake milk,” said Mr. Dao Xuan Co.
