At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Information and Communications this morning, May 5, Mr. Tran Quang Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications), issued a warning about deepfake scam calls.
According to a representative of the Department of Information Security, recently, deepfake online scam calls have exploded in Vietnam. Subjects use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create fake videos or images, copy portraits to create fake videos of relatives and friends, and make scam calls.
Immediately after receiving feedback from the people, experts from the Department of Information Security conducted analysis and issued a widespread warning.
"Deepfake is a threat to the integrity and trustworthiness of videos and images. It can be used not only for online fraud but also for other purposes such as political attacks, creating fake news or damaging the reputation of others. Most of this form of online fraud aims at financial fraud," Mr. Hung shared.
To identify deepfake scam calls, according to the representative of the Information Security Department, with the naked eye, there can still be some recognizable signs such as the call time is often very short, only a few seconds. In particular, their faces lack emotion and are quite "indifferent" when speaking or their posture looks awkward, unnatural, the direction of their head and body in the video is inconsistent with each other...
In addition, Mr. Hung said, it is also possible to see the skin color of the character in the video is unusual, the lighting is strange and the shadows are not in the right position. This can make the video look very fake and unnatural. In addition, the sound will not be consistent with the image, there will be a lot of noise lost in the clip or the clip has no sound.
"Notably, deepfake scam calls often occur in situations where the money transfer account does not belong to the person making the call. Often the scammer will disconnect halfway, saying that the signal is lost, the signal is weak... Strange factors like the above are red flags of deepfake. People should be vigilant and absolutely calm," Mr. Hung warned.
To prevent online scam calls using AI, a representative of the Information Security Department said that technology changes every day, the fight against online scams is a long-term one. Fighting online scams is not simply a matter of technology but requires legal solutions. Not only Vietnam, but governments of other countries and technology companies must work together to detect and prevent them.
"While we are waiting for a technical solution to completely prevent these forms, it is necessary for the media to widely disseminate to the people the signs of recognition, vigilance, timely grasp of information and tricks to prevent online scams," said Mr. Hung.
