On June 26, Bloomberg (USA) reported that US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is planning to visit Beijing in early July to hold high-level economic talks with China. She is expected to meet with Vice Premier in charge of Northeast Asia national economic policy He Lifeng, who took office in March 2023.

If the visit goes ahead as planned, Ms. Yellen will be the second senior Washington official to visit Beijing since the downing of a Chinese balloon over the United States in February. Last April, she said she had planned to visit China for a long time, but had to postpone it until “the right time.”

* On the same day, within the framework of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Tianjin, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang met with Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

At the discussion, noting that multilateralism, solidarity and cooperation are inevitable choices to deal with global challenges, Mr. Li Qiang said that “reducing dependence” and “eliminating risks”, as proposed by some countries, are essentially politicizing and ideologicalizing economic and trade issues. This violates the basic principles of free trade and non-discrimination advocated by the WTO, and undermines the authority and effectiveness of the multilateral trading system.

According to Premier Li Qiang, as the largest developing member of the WTO, China has always supported the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core and has fulfilled its commitments to the organization for more than 20 years.

For her part, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala said that since joining the WTO, China has continued to promote opening up, support the multilateral trading system and achieved remarkable achievements in development.

Appreciating Beijing's important contributions to the success of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference, the WTO Director-General hopes to build a strong partnership with China, make new contributions to promoting the reform of this organization and protecting the multilateral trading system.
