“As the world’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gases and the largest investors in renewable energy, we have both a shared responsibility and the ability to lead the way,” Yellen told a conference of experts in China, stressing the importance of cooperation on climate change despite the low point in relations between the two countries.
“Climate change tops the list of global challenges and the United States and China must work together to address this existential threat,” she added.
She also urged China to support existing multilateral institutions such as the Green Climate Fund and bring the private sector into the carbon-neutral transition.
“Both of our economies seek to support developing countries in their efforts to achieve their climate goals, and I believe it is important that the US and China continue to cooperate on climate finance,” she said.
Last year, China announced it was suspending climate talks after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan.
However, there are signs that talks could restart soon, with US special envoy John Kerry set to travel to China to discuss cooperation on climate change, a US official said on Friday.
In addition, during a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Friday, she also stressed that it is important for Washington and Beijing to communicate closely on global economic and financial issues and work together to address international challenges.
She is scheduled to meet with Vice Premier He Lifeng, a key Chinese economic official, later today. Issues discussed are expected to include macroeconomics, trade and technology exports.
