Speaking at a group discussion, Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang clarified concerns about the proposal to raise the retirement age for officers according to the draft law.
Minister Phan Van Giang said that raising the service age limit will allow officers with the rank of lieutenant colonel or lower to retire and have enough years of social insurance participation to receive a maximum pension of 75%, in accordance with the Law on Social Insurance.
The Minister also said that according to this law, employees who have paid social insurance for 35 years for men and 30 years for women will receive a maximum pension of 75%.
Regarding the idea of separating the retirement age for generals for men and women, the Minister of National Defense said: "We considered allowing female soldiers to retire early because it is very hard. But up to now, there has rarely been a period when there were 3 female officers as generals... In the end, we decided not to separate the retirement age for men and women."
Regarding concerns about why the retirement age for generals is set at 60, instead of 62 as in the revised Public Security Law, the Minister of National Defense said that the work of military officers is special in nature, so it is difficult to raise the retirement age.
There is a proposal to consider adjusting the retirement age of female officers with the rank of colonel to comply with the provisions of the Labor Code and the Law on Social Insurance, ensuring gender equality and taking advantage of qualified and experienced female human resources in the military.
The government has proposed increasing the retirement age of military officers at most ranks, from 1 to 5 years. According to the draft, the maximum age for officers serving in the army according to their ranks is: Lieutenant 50 years old, Major 52, Lieutenant Colonel 54; Colonel 56, Colonel 58 and General 60.
