The information was given by British Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden on the sidelines of the NATO summit in London on November 25, and he said that Russia and Britain's rivals are trying to use artificial intelligence (AI) to increase cyber attacks on the country's critical infrastructure.

According to Mr. McFadden, the British government will establish the AI Security Research Laboratory (LARS) to monitor new threats from artificial intelligence. He also emphasized that the UK's enemies could use AI to collapse the country's energy system.

The lab’s goal is to develop advanced cyber defense tools and reorganize intelligence gathering systems on cyber attacks, a strategic move to strengthen national security against the growing threat from AI technology.

LARS' initial budget was estimated at £8.22 million (about $10.3 million).

"Artificial intelligence could be used as a weapon against the UK. London is well aware of the growing threat from cyber warfare," said Minister McFadden.

Mr McFadden also added that over the past year, Russian criminals and hackers had “intensified attacks” on the UK and NATO allies providing military aid to Ukraine.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to retaliate against any country supplying weapons to Ukraine, including the UK, after London allowed Ukraine to use Storm Shadow missiles to attack Russian territory.

According to the Guardian , most experts believe that Russia would not risk launching a conventional military attack against a NATO member, but a cyber attack remains a possibility.

With this plan, Mr. McFadden believes that Russia could target the UK's communications, telecommunications and energy infrastructure systems.

Russia has carried out cyber attacks on Ukraine's power grid in the past, although Kiev's defenses have been strengthened since then.
