Italy 49 pieces from the jewelry collection of artist Umberto Mastroianni were stolen while on display, with a total loss of more than 1.3 million USD.
"These are exceptionally exquisite pieces. They are a testament to the mastery of the artist's goldsmithing skills," Lorenzo Zichichi, President of the Center for the Study of the Works of Umberto Mastroianni, commented on the stolen jewelry on March 9.
According to the management of the Vittoriale degli Italiani complex in northern Italy, where the exhibition is being held, "a particularly professional gang" carried out the theft on the night of March 6.
The collection includes 50 pieces including rings, bracelets, medallions and carvings, all created by the late artist Umberto Mastroianni, who is considered the most talented contemporary sculptor in Italy from 1950 to 1990.
The exhibition has been open since December 2023 in the Museo d'Annunzio Segreto located at Vittoriale.
The thieves took 49 pieces from the collection, worth about $1.3 million. Only one piece was recovered from the Vittoriale grounds. Mr. Zichichi called the theft an “incalculable loss.”
Italian police and art experts are coordinating the investigation.
Giordano Bruno Guerri, director of the Vittoriale degli Italiani complex, refused to reveal further information about the theft, but he confirmed that the thieves were highly sophisticated in evading the museum's dense and modern alarm network.
Guerri added that the perpetrators had specifically targeted the Umberto Mastroianni collection, as other jewels displayed nearby "were not even touched".
