On August 14, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha chaired an online conference with localities on promulgating and updating the Plan for implementing the National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 (referred to as Power Plan VIII).

The plan to implement the Power Plan VIII was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 262/QD-TTG dated April 1, 2024. The goal is to strongly transition energy from fossil fuels to new energy sources and renewable energy to reduce environmental pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to the committed goals under the Nationally Determined Contribution and the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 in Vietnam. According to the Plan, the additional capacity of concentrated solar power by 2030 is 1,500 MW.
Implementing the Government's direction on supplementing and updating the VIII Power Plan, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has reported and clarified a number of key contents related to: 7 wind power projects in the provinces of Dak Lak, Ninh Thuan, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau named in the Government Inspectorate's conclusion have been included in the project list in Decision No. 262; power source projects including: solar power, wind power, small hydropower named in Inspection Conclusion No. 1027 dated April 28, 2023 of the Government Inspectorate; wind power projects overlapping with the planning area for mineral exploration and exploitation. The Ministry of Industry and Trade proposed that the Government consider approving the update and supplement of the VIII Power Plan Implementation Plan (2nd time) for power source projects of 14 localities that have met the set criteria.
At the conference, representatives of ministries, branches and localities focused on exchanging and discussing to remove difficulties and obstacles related to solar power, wind power, small hydropower, waste-to-energy, biomass power projects; proposed qualified projects that need to be updated in the Planning.
Concluding the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha agreed with the delegates' opinions on supplementing and updating the VIII Power Plan. At the same time, he requested localities to adjust their plans in accordance with the VIII Power Plan; requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade to preside over and coordinate with relevant units to continue reviewing projects that meet the requirements for addition to the approved plan. For localities and projects that meet the requirements after inspection and examination, the Government will supplement them this year. In addition, localities will continue to review projects that meet the requirements and will continue to supplement them this year and in 2025. The Government Inspectorate will preside over and coordinate with relevant units to speed up the progress of inspection and examination so that projects can be implemented soon.
