This year's 12th graders will take the high school graduation exam with many changes.

With the expected change of the graduation exam in 2025, candidates with foreign language certificates that meet the regulations will be exempted from the foreign language exam but not converted into 10 points in the graduation recognition consideration as currently regulated, Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), expressed his support. Mr. Phu said that exempting students from the foreign language exam if they have the required certificates will help stimulate and motivate students to improve their foreign language skills, which is also a long-term goal for the orientation of English as a second language, in line with the integration trend.
However, instead of converting to 10 points, according to Mr. Phu, the Ministry needs to research a reasonable conversion scale to promote students' self-training process, not equalize as before.
Mr. Phu gave an example: IELTS 4.0 certificate is converted to 8 points, converting 6.5 to 10 points, doing so in my opinion would be better and more reasonable.
Regarding the change of exemption from the foreign language graduation exam if having a foreign language certificate in accordance with regulations, but not counting 10 points for graduation consideration, a vice principal of a high school in Thu Duc City also agreed. This vice principal analyzed that currently IELTS 4.0 or equivalent is a very low score compared to the current level of students. At the same time, it is also the same level as higher scores, so it does not have high incentive value.
"In my opinion, we should segment the scores to convert them to correspond to the conversion levels at university level, so that students will have something to strive for. If any student does not accept it, they can register for the exam to achieve the desired results and their abilities," said the above vice principal.
English teacher Dang Tran Ngoc Khuyen, Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), said that at each stage, the regulations need to be adjusted appropriately. If about 5 years ago, high school students' access to international English certificates was quite new, students should be encouraged to set compatible requirements. But now international English certificates have become popular. In particular, just a 0.5 point difference is a gap in knowledge and skills. Therefore, eliminating the leveling in the conversion of 10 points is necessary. This creates fairness for students, creates challenges for them to be more motivated, and make efforts to improve their results not only in the high school graduation exam but also in university admission and studying abroad.
