On December 23, the British military announced a successful test of shooting down enemy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using radio waves.

The British Army's Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon (RFDEW) can detect, track and attack a wide range of threats on land, in the air and at sea with the ability to disable targets up to a mile away.
Each shot of RFDEW costs only 10 cents, providing a cost-effective and complementary solution to traditional missile-based air defense systems. The high level of automation means the system only requires one person to operate and is installed on a military vehicle.
Earlier this year, the UK Ministry of Defence successfully conducted the first firing of a revolutionary high-power laser beam called DragonFire.
Laser directed energy weapons can attack targets at the speed of light and cut through them with powerful beams.

The system is being manufactured by a consortium led by Thales UK including subcontractors QinetiQ, Teledyne e2v and Horiba Mira.
