The number one spot at the North American box office after 3 days (April 18-20) has changed compared to the previous week. The rookie Sinners has defeated its “senior” from the same production company, A Minecraft Movie, to become the highest-grossing film of the weekend.
According to Variety , the vampire horror film grossed $45.6 million from 3,308 theaters in North America, marking the biggest debut for an original since Jordan Peele's Us (which opened with $71 million in 2019).
At the international box office, Sinners brought in another $15.4 million for Warner Bros., bringing its global total to $61 million.
Sinners opened impressively with $45.6 million earned at the North American box office.
“This is a great start for a period horror film. However, the huge production cost creates a lot of challenges and pressure,” commented David A. Gross, who runs the film consulting firm FranchiseRe.
Warner Bros. previously said it spent $90 million to produce Sinners , not including global marketing costs. So whether the film will be profitable or not is still a long-term story.
In Sinners , Michael B. Jordan plays two identical twin brothers and World War I veterans Elijah and Elias Moore. In 1932, they return to their Mississippi Delta hometown after years in Chicago, opening a saloon for the local black community. They have no idea what lies ahead: a sinister supernatural force. Rated R, not recommended for audiences under 18.
The film received positive reviews from both audiences and critics. Sinners is the only horror film in over 35 years to receive an “A” CinemaScore. Meanwhile, the average score on Rotten Tomatoes is a near-perfect 98%.
Nearly 40% of initial ticket buyers were black, 35% were white, 18% were Hispanic and 5% were Asian, reflecting the diversity of the audience.
After two weeks at the top of the box office, A Minecraft Movie has been pushed down to second place. However, the revenue in the last three days of this cube world work is not bad, with 41.3 million USD at the North American box office. Up to now, A Minecraft Movie has earned a total of 344 million USD in the domestic market and 720.8 million USD globally. The film retains the title of the highest-grossing Hollywood work in 2025.
A Minecraft Movie is still holding strong in its third week of release.
Sinners and A Minecraft Movie are helping Warner Bros. turn things around after back-to-back failures with The Alto Knights and Mickey 17 .
“As we continue to strive to bring more films to audiences, we are thrilled to see Sinners and Minecraft resonate with audiences in such a great way. Movies have the power to transport us to worlds that can only be imagined. Warner Bros. Pictures remains committed to delivering unique theatrical experiences to audiences looking for bold films,” said co-chairmen of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy.
After this weekend, box office revenue is up 5% from 2024, though it’s still nearly 29% behind 2019, according to Comscore . That’s a significant improvement from just a few weeks ago, when ticket sales were more than 11% below 2024 and 40% behind 2019.
Snow White continued to drop from 8th place last week to 10th place. The film earned nearly 1.2 million USD in the 3-day weekend in North America. The film's global revenue since its release is 184.9 million USD.
