Ministry of Interior informs about disciplinary action against Venerable Thich Chan Quang

(Dan Tri) - Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra responded to voters about the Central Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha taking disciplinary action against Venerable Thich Chan Quang - also known as Mr. Vuong Tan Viet.

Voters in Ba Ria - Vung Tau reported that recently, many monks have appeared on the internet, preaching superstitious sermons, criticizing people's professions and going against Buddhist teachings, causing disgust and resentment in the community. This has happened frequently and for a long time, but there has been no information about any agency working, reminding or handling it. From there, according to voters in Ba Ria - Vung Tau, it has caused confusion among the people and may lead to conflicts between religions and believers. Responding to voters, Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra affirmed that she had assigned the Government Committee for Religious Affairs to work with the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Executive Council to request an investigation and verification of cases of statements and sermons by Buddhist dignitaries spread on social networking sites that are not in accordance with Buddhist teachings, canon laws, cultural traditions, and national history. Buddhist dignitaries, officials, and monks who violated the rules were strictly punished, including Venerable Thich Chan Quang - abbot of Phat Quang pagoda (Tan Hai commune, Phu My town, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) and Venerable Thich Nhuan Duc - of Ho Phap pagoda (Phu My town, Ba Ria - Vung Tau).

Specifically, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha disciplined Venerable Thich Chan Quang by not preaching in any form, not presiding over events that gather large crowds at Phat Quang Pagoda and other locations for a period of 2 years; revoked all Three Jewels' ordinations that contain content that self-corrects one of the five precepts that are not in accordance with the five precepts established by the Buddha in Buddhist precepts. The Sangha also requested the removal of all sermons that cause public confusion; and rectified the activities of Phat Quang Buddhist monasteries and youth groups in provinces and cities. The Sangha requested that Venerable Thich Chan Quang's sermons not be posted on social media platforms during his time in retreat for repentance at Phat Quang Pagoda. Venerable Thich Nhuan Duc was banned from preaching indefinitely in any form for making rude comments about the Khmer people. In addition, the Minister of Home Affairs said that this agency also coordinated with a number of relevant ministries and branches to establish 3 teams to conduct surprise inspections of the implementation of legal regulations on beliefs and religions for a number of dignitaries, officials, and monks in the provinces of Quang Ninh, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, and Ho Chi Minh City. The results of the inspections will be reported and proposed to the Prime Minister. In the coming time, the Ministry of Home Affairs will work with leaders of a number of religious organizations, including the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, to strengthen the management of dignitaries, officials, and monks; promptly take measures to correct deviant activities to ensure compliance with the Charter and Regulations of religious organizations and the laws of the State. The Ministry will also direct the Government Committee for Religious Affairs to regularly grasp information, recommendations, and reflections from citizens on illegal religious activities, including violations in the statements and preaching of dignitaries, officials, and monks, in order to promptly verify and handle them. The female Minister affirmed that she will strengthen inspection and examination work to promptly correct illegal religious and belief activities, and not take advantage of the internet and social networks to spread news, attract and incite religious followers to cause complications in security and order.
Mr. Vuong Tan Viet's name is not on the list of high school diplomas Mr. Vuong Tan Viet - also known as Venerable Thich Chan Quang - is becoming the focus of public attention when he successfully defended his doctoral thesis at Hanoi Law University after a period of 2 years and 3 months. Most recently, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City has a document reporting to the Government Committee for Religious Affairs (Ministry of Home Affairs) to verify the high school diploma of Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (born in 1959). The Department confirmed that the name of Vuong Tan Viet (born in 1959) is not on the list of candidates and the score sheet of the 1989 high school diploma of the Department. Mr. Vuong Tan Viet's name is also not on the list of high school diplomas awarded on June 6, 1989 of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City.
