Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs speaks out about the US's temporary suspension of reciprocal tariffs - Lang Son Newspaper and Radio and Television

Vietnam believes that the US decision to stop imposing reciprocal tariffs is a positive step and will continue to negotiate with the US an agreement towards fair and sustainable trade.

On the afternoon of April 10, answering a reporter's question about Vietnam's reaction after the US temporarily suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said that Vietnam considers the US's decision to suspend reciprocal tariffs to be a positive step.

In the spirit of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, Vietnam and the US will continue to negotiate agreements towards fair and sustainable trade, meeting the interests of the people and businesses of the two countries. This demonstrates the spirit of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries as well as the spirit of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

" We believe that the US decision to suspend reciprocal tariffs for 90 days on exports from countries to the US, including Vietnam, is a positive step.

In the spirit of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, Vietnam will negotiate with the United States on a reciprocal trade agreement, on the basis of mutual respect, to achieve satisfactory solutions towards fair and sustainable trade and to meet the interests of the people and businesses of the two countries.

This will demonstrate the spirit of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, as well as the spirit after 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries ," the Spokesperson said.

Earlier, in a meeting on the afternoon of April 9 (local time) with Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the US agreed that the two sides should start negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement, which would include tax agreements and suggested that technical levels of both sides start discussions immediately.

The two sides agreed to continue to closely coordinate to promote a favorable business environment, proactively review and consider minimizing non-tariff barriers to each other's goods, creating favorable conditions for US businesses to increase investment and business in Vietnam; and strengthen coordination to control and prevent acts of trade fraud.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc suggested that although the US has decided to postpone the imposition of tariffs for 90 days, the two countries need to soon negotiate a bilateral trade agreement to create a long-term framework to promote stable and mutually beneficial economic and trade relations, in line with the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that in recent times, Vietnam has proactively implemented many measures to contribute to resolving the trade deficit between the two sides, responding to the concerns of the US; accordingly, the US's imposition of high tariffs on Vietnam's export goods is not consistent with the mutually beneficial economic and trade relations between the two countries, and does not truly reflect the spirit of the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam wishes to continue to strengthen and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the US; thanked the US Government for always supporting a "strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous" Vietnam; emphasized that Vietnam is persistent in building an independent and self-reliant economy, and persistently pursuing an independent and self-reliant foreign policy, multilateralizing and diversifying foreign relations.
