The first motherboard supporting the groundbreaking RAM standard has arrived

CAMM2 is a RAM standard announced by JEDEC, the standardization body that oversees memory standards in the computer industry, in December 2023. A month later, Micron became the first company to announce RAM modules based on the new standard. In April 2024, Micron partnered with Lenovo to produce the first laptop that supports LCAMM2 memory.

Prototype motherboard supporting CAMM2 RAM standard

CAMM2 is considered a laptop-specific technology, but MSI's new Z790 desktop motherboard makes it easier for users to access the new RAM technology. The teaser shared on X highlights a black PCB with silver accents. The regular DDR5 RAM slots have been replaced with a single CAMM2 module to accommodate the Kingston Fury Impact DDR5 CAMM2 prototype.

Called the Z790 Project Zero Plus, this motherboard is part of MSI's Project Zero line, where most of the connectors come out on the rear of the motherboard for better cable management. This improves airflow and aesthetics, as long as the case is designed to support rear connections.

The post was tagged with the Computex 2024 hashtag by MSI, so it's likely that the motherboard will be on display at the trade show in Taiwan next month. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out and whether CAMM2 has a future in the desktop space. According to Tom's Hardware, Kingston's CAMM2 memory does not use LPDDR5X and is limited to JEDEC DDR5 speeds. If it's a hit with enthusiasts, it may be time to wait for the LPDDR5X version to show its power.
