Apple says that if you forget your Vision Pro password, you’ll need to take your headset back to a store or send it to an AppleCare customer service center to reset it—just one of the annoyances that early adopters of the $3,499 device have run into.
Apple employees have been inundated with questions from people struggling to set up Optic ID (the eye-scanner that logs into devices) to the built-in Apple Music app.
However, the password issue is considered the most annoying. When customers enter the wrong password too many times, the headset is disabled. If they still cannot remember the password after a certain period of time, they need to return it to Apple. At that time, all the content on the device will be erased.
This oddity doesn’t happen with other Apple products. For example, the Apple Watch has a mechanism that allows users to reset their password if they forget it. Perhaps in the future, the iPhone manufacturer will update the software so that users can reset their password without having to return the product.
On Apple’s community forums, one customer described speaking with a company employee who was receiving numerous calls about the issue. “He had to deal with a lot of angry customers after telling them the only solution was to send it back to the store. He said Apple Support had not considered this and apologized for not being better prepared.”
Another problem is that the Vision Pro doesn’t have a USB-C port, which would allow it to connect to a Mac for troubleshooting purposes. Last week, Apple released a special strap for developers to attach the headset to a Mac, but the accessory costs $30 and isn’t available to consumers.
The Vision Pro is Apple’s first new hardware category since the smartwatch nearly a decade ago. The device isn’t expected to be a blockbuster—in part because of its high price tag—but curious shoppers flocked to Apple Stores last weekend to try it out.
Initial reactions to the Vision Pro have been generally positive. Many people have praised the device's video playback and productivity features.
