During the 2024 college admissions season, a father and son in Qinghai Province (Northwest China) attracted public attention because they not only took the college entrance exam together but also received admission notices.
47-year-old father Liu Jianbo scored 454 points and was admitted to Guangxi Normal University. This is a dream he has been waiting for for many years.
Liu Aohan's son scored 625 points and was accepted into the Future Aerospace Leaders Program at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (Beihang University for short).
"My son got good results in the exam, I am very proud. I did not do very well in the exam, my expectation was more than 500 points," Mr. Luu shared.
College Dreams Take Off
Dynamic and static, hot and cold, the contrast in the personalities of father and son Liu is very clear. Liu Jian Ba wears sportswear, full of energy and smiles when talking while his son Ngai Han is a bit reserved, occasionally smiling when listening to his father recount his life and interesting things during their exam preparation.
Born in 1977, his father Liu Jianbo studied in Tongren County, Huangnan Autonomous Prefecture (Qinghai, China). In 1993, he scored 530 points in the high school entrance exam, ranking first in Huangnan and 49th in Qinghai Province. However, many excellent students at that time dropped out of high school to find stable jobs, and he also attended a technical secondary school.
After graduating from the Tianjin Railway Engineering College with a degree in computer science, he was assigned to work at the Xining Railway Branch. During this time, Liu studied on his own and obtained a work-study degree from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. He then got married, gave birth to Liu Aohan, and his life gradually stabilized.
The change happened when Ngo Han's son was in his second year of middle school. Seeing that his son was doing poorly in school and was addicted to games, Mr. Luu decided to study with him to motivate him.
He and his wife agreed not to watch TV or play with their phones to set an example. Both father and son started studying together, taking online classes and exchanging knowledge after school and work. As a result, Liu Aohan's grades improved significantly and he was admitted to the key high school Huangchuan.
When his son was in his second year of high school, Mr. Liu decided to take the college entrance exam and study with his son to fulfill his dream of studying at a regular university.
"I am better at social studies than science, and my son is the opposite. If I were 18 again and took the university entrance exam with my son, my results would probably be as high as his," Mr. Luu humorously shared.
Of all the subjects, Mr. Liu is good at Chinese and has the most difficulty with Math, while his son has the opposite difficulty. Therefore, father and son often help each other with Math and sometimes the son is asked by his father to take a Chinese literature test.
However, father and son still studied most subjects separately. During the day, Liu Jianbo went to work as usual and only used his lunch break to review. After work, he read books and reviewed with his son, usually from 6 p.m. until late at night.
During the one-month sprint before the Gaokao, his son went to bed early but Mr. Liu was often awake until around 3 a.m.
Don't force your child to continue their unfinished dream.
During that time, his wife and mother, Truong To Cach, took on more housework and always supported the father and son in pursuing their dreams.
After receiving her husband and son's admission notice, she proudly shared with the press: "People often praise me as a hard-working woman, but what I am most proud of is having a studious husband and a studious son."
In the opinion of Mr. Liu and his wife, parents should set an example instead of imposing their regrets or unfulfilled dreams on their children. Mr. Liu studied at a technical college, regretfully went to a regular university, but he never asked his son to fulfill his dream.
“Some parents demand that their children be in the top 3 in their class, but they themselves just lie on the sofa watching videos and scrolling through their phones, probably because they are in their forties or fifties. But I believe that, at any age, parents should set an example for their children. Only when parents can do it themselves can they ask their children to do it.”
"I learned little by little. At that time, we rented a house near my son's school and every day I had to spend an hour riding the bus to work. During that time, I took the opportunity to memorize vocabulary. I persevered like that for more than 3 years," Mr. Luu shared.
“The biggest thing I learned from my father is the virtue of never stopping studying and working hard,” said Liu Ao Han.
Talking about his future plans, Mr. Liu said that he had long wanted to study Chinese language and literature. However, Guangxi Normal University required full-time study and he did not want to quit his current job, so he chose business administration.
However, because the school did not accept credit accumulation during winter and summer breaks, he had to give up his dream of attending a regular university.
Despite his regrets, Liu Jianbo does not regret his choice. He shared that when his son finishes his studies and graduates, which is also when he retires, he will retake the university entrance exam to fulfill his unfinished dream of Chinese literature.
At the age of 55, Mr. Liu did not hesitate to return to the classroom. “I do not feel old. I do not feel ashamed to compete with young candidates. I myself am inspired by people older than me who continue to study. I am very confident in pursuing my dream.”
