Due to the low price of beef cattle, including 3B cattle, Mr. Duong Van Hong, Director of Nga My Cattle Breeding Cooperative, Nga My Commune, Phu Binh District (Thai Nguyen Province) has researched, learned and processed beef into specialized products to bring to the market. To date, his cooperative has had 3 products certified with 3-star OCOP.
Necessity is the mother of invention for 3B cow farmers
From a difficult family economy, Mr. Duong Van Hong (Phu Xuan hamlet, Nga My commune, Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen province) had to struggle with many different jobs.
Sharing with PV Dan Viet, Mr. Hong said: “I was born into a family with difficult circumstances, a family of two, mother and son, so my mother had to work very hard to raise me. Growing up, due to the family's financial constraints, I had to drop out of school early to help my mother take care of the family's life.”
After trying many different jobs without any improvement in income, in 2010 I decided to invest in pig farming.
But then the continuous epidemic and unstable prices made livestock farming increasingly unprofitable, so in 2019, Mr. Hong decided to switch to raising 3B cows.
In 2022, with the support of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Agricultural Extension Center to implement the model of "Fattening beef cattle, treating the environment with biological products combined with growing biomass corn", Mr. Hong and local cattle farmers registered to participate.

Also in 2022, with the guidance of local authorities, Mr. Hong joined with livestock farmers in the area to establish Nga My Cattle Breeding and Agricultural Production Services Cooperative with a total of 35 members.
In 2023, when beef prices were low, Mr. Hong researched and learned from many places, then decided to invest in building a factory with a scale of 300m2, costing more than 1 billion VND, then started processing specialized products from beef and pork materials of the cooperative to bring to the market such as: Dried beef, beef sausage, pork sausage, beef ham, pork ham, beef meatballs, grilled sausage...

However, initially, it was quite difficult to compete with the market on the price of processed products because many similar items had lower prices. However, Mr. Hong gradually asserted himself with the quality of his products and customers gradually accepted it.
Up to now, the cooperative's products have been introduced to a number of supermarkets in Thai Nguyen province such as: Pado mart, Dung Minh, Kim Ngan, Hoang Ngan...
Currently, the cooperative is raising nearly 500 commercial 3B cows, of which Mr. Hong's family alone is raising 50 cows.
In addition to selling fresh meat, the cooperative also has 14 products processed from pork and beef. In 2024, the cooperative will continue to expand its scale, increase the number of livestock, and build the OCOP brand for 3 products: dried beef, beef ham, and beef sausage.

On average, each month, Nga My Cattle Breeding and Agricultural Production Services Cooperative produces and sells about 1 ton of various products to the market with an increasing number of orders.
Orientation of circular agricultural production
In addition, Mr. Hong shared that the cooperative is aiming to move towards a closed-loop agricultural model. Specifically, with the source of cow manure discharged during the livestock raising process, the cooperative will use it to raise earthworms, helping to solve the problem of environmental pollution.
Part of the manure will then be used to fertilize crops, and part will be sold to cooperatives and businesses in the province, bringing in a relatively large additional income. Since the beginning of the year, the cooperative has sold nearly 100 tons of treated cow manure, bringing in nearly 200 million VND.
For earthworms, they will be fermented with probiotics and mixed with animal feed to raise cows and pigs very effectively, helping to reduce costs and help animals grow quickly due to the very high nutritional content in earthworms.

“At first, it was very difficult to mobilize cattle farmers to follow the circular model, requiring a whole process, but when they saw the effectiveness of the model, they voluntarily joined the cooperative to work together,” said Mr. Hong.
In the future, Mr. Hong plans to continue raising pigs with green tea powder to have a source of clean, quality pork to serve the processing of the cooperative's products.
Currently, according to Mr. Hong, the Cooperative still undertakes to purchase products for associated households if prices drop, however, in order for the Cooperative to purchase cattle at a higher price than the market, households are required to raise cattle according to the procedures set forth by the Cooperative.

With the current production model, the cooperative is creating regular jobs for 4 workers at the processing factory and 2 cattle raising workers with an average income of 9 million VND/person/month.
