Blackpink wearing conical hats and the story of Ngo Thanh Van bringing Vietnamese fish sauce to an American film

Right after the movie “The Creator” was released, Ngo Thanh Van shared that mentioning Vietnam’s “fish sauce” on the world screen made her very proud.

Actress Ngo Thanh Van participated in the American film “The Creator” (Vietnamese title: The Creator) with a small role, appearing for a short time. In the film, Ngo Thanh Van plays a robot named Kami.

Ngo Thanh Van shared that when she was invited to this project, she discussed with director Gareth Edwards that the character would speak Vietnamese and be Vietnamese. The movie “The Creator” has scenes filmed in Ha Long Bay and mentions Vietnamese fish sauce.

Talking about her role in the film, Ngo Thanh Van said: "When participating in any Hollywood project, I always change the character's origin to Vietnamese. If it is already a Vietnamese character, I often add typical Vietnamese elements to the Vietnamese dialogue.

When I have the opportunity to appear in an international project, I always want to make an impression so that everyone knows I am Vietnamese."

Ngo Thanh Van’s efforts to promote Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese language and Vietnamese fish sauce when participating in an international film project have delighted audiences. The audience has given many compliments to the efforts of the “Vietnamese female action star” and affirmed that despite her limited appearances, Ngo Thanh Van is not overshadowed in American films.

Vietnamese cultural identity is expected to be promoted more widely than ever when the cultural industry (with 12 key industries) is expected to create economic and social miracles by 2045.

The symbolic images of Vietnamese culture in the international arena are considered to be still few, not diverse and rich.

In July 2023, when the global music group Blackpink came to Hanoi to perform, to please the Vietnamese audience, Blackpink praised the delicious pho, and they wore conical hats together when saying hello to thousands of spectators at My Dinh Stadium.

This action of Blackpink made fans emotional.

Blackpink must have learned about Vietnamese culture when they came to Hanoi. However, from another perspective, pho and conical hats seem to have become the “catchphrase” of most Korean stars when they came to Vietnam, since 10 years ago.

In 2012, Song Seung Hun came to Hanoi with Kim Tae Hee - then a famous beauty after appearing in the movie "Stairway to Heaven", they took pictures together wearing conical hats, and praised the deliciousness of Vietnamese pho.

Since Song Seung Hun until now, almost every Korean star coming to Vietnam praises pho, praises conical hats, and "a little closer" wears ao dai.

In 2016, Hong Kong (Chinese) actress Myolie Wu and her husband took a photo with conical hats in the background of a pho restaurant to "check-in" Vietnam.

Most recently, in September 2023, Thai actress Mai Davika, after visiting Vietnam twice, also posted a photo of herself wearing a conical hat on her personal page to express her feelings.

The story about promoting traditional cultural images is still limited, only revolving around pho, conical hats... was mentioned in the Tao Quan program 2016.

Accordingly, the people who made Tao Quan in 2016 sent a message of wanting to spread more images of Vietnamese culture, besides pho and conical hats.

Hopefully, Ngo Thanh Van's story about fish sauce will set a new "trend", so that Vietnamese cuisine and traditional Vietnamese culture can step out into the world more and more diversely and richly.
