On August 23, information from the Binh Phuoc Provincial Center for Disease Control (Binh Phuoc CDC) said that a number of cases of neonatal tetanus have recently reappeared in the area among ethnic minorities.
Medical staff of Dong Phu district surveyed and recorded the case of baby girl XYD (born June 27, 2023, Mong ethnic group) diagnosed with neonatal tetanus in Pa Pech hamlet, Tan Hung commune. |
Recently, there have been 3 cases of neonatal tetanus in the province. Of which, the case in Bu Dop district is of the S'tieng ethnic group; the two cases in Dong Phu district are of the Mong ethnic group who came to Binh Phuoc to work seasonally, frequently changing their workplace and residence. The reason is due to difficulties in managing the expanded vaccination target group. Some remote communes and communes with a large ethnic minority population have not carried out the expanded vaccination for women and children well.
Residence of baby boy LAV, (born July 3, 2023, Mong ethnic group, at Lam Son 1 Rubber Plantation collective housing area, Lam Son hamlet, Tan Phuoc commune, Dong Phu district) was diagnosed with neonatal tetanus. |
In 2023, Binh Phuoc CDC requested the Medical Centers of Dong Phu and Bu Dop districts to urgently investigate, collect information, detect and handle cases of neonatal tetanus occurring in the locality in accordance with regulations; step up propaganda and thoroughly handle the situation of home births, midwives and medical facilities without operating licenses. The Medical Centers of Dong Phu and Bu Dop districts should increase vaccination outside the station for communes with difficult travel areas and a large population of ethnic minorities, but must ensure full conditions for vaccination points outside the station. Binh Phuoc CDC supports vaccines and vaccination supplies.
According to the Binh Phuoc CDC, on average, 1 to 2 cases of tetanus are detected in the province each year. However, this number is within the allowable rate of the general regulation on this disease, which is 1/1,000 newborns. Both districts have a higher number of cases than the population rate regulation.
