Pyongyang harshly calls the US "adventurism", threatens overwhelming response, Seoul discusses cooperation with the UN

North Korea on March 25 protested the recent joint naval drills between South Korea, the United States and Japan, warning of an "overwhelming" and "decisive" response to any provocation.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) made the remarks in a commentary about the three-way naval drills conducted in international waters off the southern resort island of Jeju from March 17 to 20.

Note The trilateral exercise was conducted in parallel with the annual South Korea-US joint "Freedom Shield" exercise, with KCNA accusing the event of "pushing the already tense regional political and military situation to the extreme".

The commentary stated: "The US adventure to dominate the entire Asia- Pacific region, together with hostile forces, is completely beyond all precedents. Any provocation or threat from hostile countries will be met with an overwhelming and decisive response."

This is the first joint naval exercise between the three countries this year and since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. The event involved the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and was aimed at strengthening deterrence against military threats from North Korea.

Meanwhile, on the same day, March 25, the South Korean Foreign Ministry announced that Second Vice Foreign Minister Kang In-sun held talks with United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on cooperation in resolving the North Korean issue and other issues.

The meeting took place on March 24 in New York as part of Ms. Kang's four-day working trip, which included a high-level open discussion on UN peacekeeping operations and a press conference on the situation in Syria.

During the meeting, Vice Minister Kang asked the UN to continue sending strong messages condemning North Korea's violations of UN Security Council resolutions, especially its establishment of a military alliance with Russia.

She also had a private meeting with UN Development Programme Deputy Administrator Haoliang Xu and proposed to continue implementing more effective and influential cooperation projects.
