In the winter-spring crop of 2025, the entire Binh Lieu district plans to plant over 2,000 hectares, however, due to hot and dry weather, some rice growing areas do not have enough water to plant. Many rice, corn, and cassava fields are seriously lacking water.
To have water for plowing, many families have solved the problem by using hundreds of meters of hose to pump water from the stream to the fields. Mr. Hoang Di Thim, Phieng Sap village, Dong Tam commune shared: “My family has over 3,000 square meters of rice fields for this crop, but due to the prolonged hot weather, there is no water for planting. Therefore, my family had to use a hose to pump water from the stream to plant. After 3 days of pumping water, my family has only been able to plant 2/3 of the area.”
Currently, due to lack of rain, the water level in ponds, lakes, rivers and streams is low, greatly affecting irrigation and agricultural production, many rice growing areas are almost abandoned. Mr. Phùng Dương Huy, Secretary and Head of Phieng Sap village shared: “This year, the weather is harsh, there has been no rain since the beginning of the year, so many households in the village do not have enough water for plowing. Many families have had to buy pumps and pipes to pump water from the streams to the fields. Many areas of cassava and corn of households cannot grow due to lack of irrigation water. Many households now even have to carry water for daily use.”
It is expected that this winter-spring crop, the whole Binh Lieu district will plant over 2,000 hectares of various crops, specifically: 481 hectares of rice, 370 hectares of corn, 102 hectares of corn, 88 hectares of cassava, 160 hectares of arrowroot, 174 hectares of peanuts, etc. However, up to this point, the whole district has only planted over 313 hectares of rice, reaching 65% of the plan; 360 hectares of corn, reaching 98% of the plan; over 93 hectares of potatoes, reaching 92% of the plan; over 155 hectares of arrowroot, reaching 97% of the plan; over 94 hectares of cassava, reaching 107% of the plan; over 169 hectares of peanuts, reaching 97% of the plan, etc.
This is a very necessary time to use water for irrigation. If there is no rain in the coming time, the risk of drought and uncultivable areas will increase.
Faced with the severe drought, authorities at all levels from districts to communes and towns are stepping up propaganda and guiding farmers to implement water-saving measures and effectively use existing water resources. At the same time, people need to proactively adapt by using appropriate irrigation methods, rotating irrigation, or switching to crops that are more drought-resistant. However, in the coming time, if the drought continues and there is no rain, the risk of affecting crop yields is very high. Farmers need to continue to monitor weather developments and prepare plans to deal with drought to minimize damage.
