According to Mr. Ta Xuan Chanh - Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Binh Dinh province, among the traditional craft villages in Binh Dinh province included in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage, Phu Gia horse hat village occupies a quite important position.
"For a long time, Binh Dinh people have been very proud of the image of the famous horse-shaped conical hat in the North and South. Historically, since the time of Emperor Quang Trung, the hat has been associated with the Tay Son army.
Through the ups and downs of time, the hat is not only used to protect the head from rain and sun, but is also a unique handicraft item, the image of the horse hat carries the traditional cultural identity of Binh Dinh people," Mr. Chanh shared.
Also according to Mr. Chanh: "In the coming time, the department will proactively coordinate with relevant agencies to advise on developing a plan to protect and promote the value of the traditional craft - Phu Gia horse hat weaving in Cat Tuong commune.
This is a cultural resource rich in humanity, which has fundamental significance for developing the tourism industry, making tourism activities more diverse.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam (73 years old, in Phu Gia village) said she has been in this profession since she was a child.
This job requires a lot of effort and time but the income is low, so many people have quit.
"We are very happy that the traditional craft village of Phu Gia horse-hat weaving has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.
In the past, we passed on the profession to our children and grandchildren, but they were less interested than our generation. I really hope the government will pay attention to preserving and developing this profession because it is the effort of our ancestors," Ms. Tam shared.
Phu Gia traditional horse hat weaving craft village is located in Phu Gia village, Cat Tuong commune, and is over 300 years old.
Currently, in Cat Tuong commune, there are about 120 households still making horse hats. In the past, only kings and court officials were allowed to wear these hats.
