According to Dung Taylor, the couple's 11-year engagement was a "mutual test". When they first met, Dung Taylor was single and had no experience in marriage or raising children. Thu Phuong believed that Dung Taylor did not have enough experience, patience and tolerance to be a husband and father. After 11 years of living together, going through ups and downs, they decided to become legally married under US law.
