Locals, tourists as well as ethnic minorities living and working in the Village were moved when witnessing the reenactment of the Hoang Sa Soldiers' Commemoration Ceremony as well as the stories surrounding this ceremony.
Around the beginning of the 17th century, during the reign of the Nguyen Lords, realizing the importance of expanding the territory and valuable resources in the East Sea of the Fatherland, especially in the two archipelagos of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa, the Nguyen Lords established the "Hoang Sa team" consisting of 70 skilled seafarers in An Vinh and An Hai villages in the Sa Ky estuary (now in Son Tinh and Binh Son districts) and An Vinh and An Hai villages on Ly Son island to go out to sea to search for products.
Every February or March of the lunar calendar, this army received orders to leave and returned in August of the lunar calendar to submit valuable products exploited in the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa sea areas to the royal court.
Throughout centuries of operation, tens of thousands of Hoang Sa marines have overcome countless storms and waves to carry out their mission of preserving territorial sovereignty in the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos.
During those arduous sea voyages, many soldiers went away and never returned. To commemorate the soldiers who died on duty and to pray for peace for new soldiers, every year in the third lunar month, the people of Ly Son island organize the Hoang Sa Soldiers Commemoration Ceremony, attracting the participation of clans whose members served as soldiers on the island.
Khao le is an annual ritual, while the the linh is a ritual to pay respect to the Hoang Sa navy soldiers. The Khao le The linh Hoang Sa ceremony is also to pay respect to ancestors, to pay respect and to remember the deceased soldiers of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa.
The Hoang Sa Soldiers' Commemoration Festival is held by the people of Ly Son Island at the end of the third lunar month every year, attracting a large number of tourists and local people to attend.
The Khao Le The Linh Hoang Sa ceremony held at Am Linh Pagoda or An Vinh communal house or at clans on Ly Son island has contributed to arousing patriotism, preserving the cultural values of our ancestors, helping to unite the community, and educating traditions for generations of people on Ly Son island in particular and the whole country in general.
In April 2013, the Hoang Sa Soldiers' Commemoration Ceremony was ranked by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, in the category of Social Practices and Beliefs.
The Hoang Sa Soldier Commemoration Ceremony contributes to affirming Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos; at the same time, it preserves and promotes cultural values, while educating the tradition of national pride and profound humanistic values.
Also at the program “Sea and islands in the hearts of the people”, local people and tourists as well as ethnic minorities can watch Quang Ngai artists and actors perform the intangible cultural heritage of humanity “The art of Bai Choi in Central Vietnam”. Not only can they watch the performance, local people and tourists can also directly participate in Bai Choi activities.
