Complications of arterial disease

Báo Đầu tưBáo Đầu tư12/09/2024

Lower extremity vascular diseases include lower extremity arteriovenous malformations, which cause discomfort, pain, and affect daily life. In more severe cases, they can lead to necrosis, ulcers requiring amputation, and many dangerous complications, even death.

According to statistics, peripheral artery disease affects approximately over 200 million people globally. Meanwhile, about 30% of the adult population has hidden varicose vein problems, a rate that increases in older age groups.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is also a common disease that easily leads to venous blockage, and is the third most common cause of death from cardiovascular disease, after myocardial infarction and stroke.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, from the Cardiology Department of Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi , the rate of patients with lower limb arterial and venous diseases visiting Tam Anh General Hospital is quite high, but this condition has not received adequate attention or awareness of prevention among the public.

Lower extremity arterial disease.

Lower extremity arterial disease: 90% of cases are caused by atherosclerosis, leading to narrowing and blockage of the arterial lumen, reducing blood flow to organs and tissues (skin, nerves) downstream. Untreated ischemia can lead to muscle atrophy, paralysis, limb necrosis, infectious complications, and even death.

The main risk factors for the disease are smoking, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperhomocysteinemia; these risk factors increase the development of peripheral artery disease as well as other atherosclerotic arterial diseases.

Lower extremity varicose veins occur when the vein walls and valves weaken, preventing blood from returning to the heart as it normally would. Blood flows backward, pooling in the downstream veins, causing the veins to become dilated and tortuous.

In mild cases, varicose veins cause tingling, numbness, and aching in the legs, along with cosmetic concerns. In severe cases, the condition can lead to complications such as blood clot formation, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism, which are life-threatening.

The disease has many causes, stemming from lifestyle habits, prolonged standing or sitting, lack of exercise, heavy lifting, multiple pregnancies and births, obesity, lack of exercise, a diet low in fiber and vitamins; valve degeneration in the elderly, phlebitis, congenital valve defects, etc.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of blood clots within veins. This condition can occur in any vein in the body, but it is most common in the lower extremities.

The most dangerous complication of deep vein thrombosis is pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal. Circulatory stagnation, increased blood clotting, and damage to the venous endothelium are the main causes of deep vein thrombosis.

According to Dr. Trang, with the development of modern medicine, there are now many methods for screening and treating lower limb vascular diseases, helping patients avoid illness and life-threatening complications.

Medical treatments combined with a healthy diet, lifestyle, and quitting smoking and alcohol offer a good prognosis in the early stages of the disease. In more severe cases, more drastic interventions and surgery are needed.

At Tam Anh General Hospital, varicose veins can be treated with surgery, laser therapy, radiofrequency ablation, or biological glue to completely eliminate diseased superficial veins. Balloon angioplasty, stent placement, combined surgical interventions (hybrid or bypass surgery) are applied to cases of lower limb arterial stenosis.
