Introduction to the stele of the Doctorate examinations in the year Binh Thin (1616)

The stele with the names of the Doctors of the Binh Thin examination, the 17th year of the Hoang Dinh reign (1616), is currently erected in the grounds of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam, Hanoi . This is one of the important steles marking the Hoi examination under the reign of King Le Kinh Tong, engraved and erected on November 16, the first year of Thinh Duc (1653), under the reign of King Le Than Tong.

The stele is engraved with the names of four Third Class Doctorate graduates:

  • Le Tri Dung, from Yen Nhan commune, Chuong Duc district.
  • Vu Mien, from Ngoc Tri commune, Luong Tai district.
  • Tran Nghi, from Chau Kieu commune, Gia Lam district.
  • Nguyen Hi Tai, from Noi Due commune, Tien Du district.

The Binh Thin examination in 1616 was organized under the supervision of many famous mandarins of the dynasty: the Special Envoy for the Examination was the Left Admiral Ly Quan Cong Le Luu, and the Tri Cong Cu was the Minister of Rites and the Imperial Academy's Te Tuu Dong Cac Dai Hoc Si Nghia. That showed the importance placed on selecting talented people to serve the country in the historical context of the early 17th century.
